Edit - I just found the valuation. We're talking billions.

Apparently so is he:

He told the South China Morning Post he has reached agreement on taking up shares in two film companies in Hollywood, and is close to signing off on a third.

Details of one of the deals, valued at US$200 million, will be made public by the end of this month. Another, worth “billions of US dollars”, involves an investment in one of the “big six” movie studios, says Xia, while the third will be a stake in a “big eight” studio and is worth tens of millions.

The term “big six” in Hollywood normally refers to Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Universal, Sony Pictures and Walt Disney.

I'm not sure whether to raise an eyebrow or faint.

Paramount Pictures to receive $1bn investment from two Chinese film companies

The Chinese companies will jointly finance 25% of all Paramount films over the next three years.

Paramount Pictures has struck a $1bn (£810m) joint investment deal with Shanghai Film Group and Huahua Media. The three-year deal between the Viacom subsidiary and the two Chinese companies was announced by Paramount Pictures Chairman and CEO Brad Grey, Shanghai Film Group Chairman Ren Zhonglun and Huahua Media Chairman Wang Kefei.

The deal follows the trio's meeting in Shanghai in November to finalise the terms of the transaction.

Is Xia involved with these 2 Chinese companies?

  • 20th Century Fox - now owned by 21st Century Fox.
  • Columbia Pictures - now owned by Sony.
  • MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer).
  • Paramount Pictures - now owned by Viacom.
  • RKO Radio Pictures - defunct c. 1957.
  • United Artists - purchased by MGM.
  • Universal Studios - now a part of NBC Universal.
  • Warner Bros. - now Time Warner.

That's those eight - if he's bought one of those I'd be more than a little surprised.

There's companies - i.e. production companies, and there are film studios, both major and mini-major.

The list above is of major studios. There are minor ones e.g. Lionsgate, the Weinstein company.

Quite possible Big T has his eye on a prodco or mini-major.

MGMs being dying a slow death for years, riddled with debt and just lost the bond franchise, they're basically distributors with then a few co productions a year

theyd be the easiest to buy at a guess but you'd hope they've got some gems in the catelogue ripe for a reboot

Big T may be investing in a Chinese company that invests in a studio. That would make him an investor by proxy, but still an investor. He'd be investing alongside others.

You can buy shares for tens of millions. Co-financing is a deal worth hundreds of millions.

This is fascinating stuff from Big T.

No, at least not publicly. But all film companies in China are kinda linked and partially-owned and invested by various holding companies, which are then owned by various rich people... so...

I'd like to see a VT film.

Trent can be played by James Corden. Stevo can be played by Vin Diesel, Don't Do It Doug can be played by Whoopi Goldberg.

Idea: Limpid, played by Morgan Freeman is the little voice in people's heads, without Limpid the VT world would fall apart. So what happens when an Android phone tries to take control? Trent, Stevo and DDID fight for our rights in this action thriller.

I'll work on a script.

In the second act, the plot gets derailed and just ends up with everyone bickering about Westwood for the last 50 minutes.
