New Aston Villa signing Oscar Borg has taken to Twitter to express his delight at making the move to the Midlands.

Borg, 18, officially joined Villa from Premier League counterparts West Ham United on Thursday, penning a deal until the summer of 2018.

The young winger, who is also capable of playing at full-back, originally started out his career in AFC Wimbledon’s ranks but left the club to join West Ham at the age of 12.

Previously highly-regarded by the Hammers setup, he reportedly came close to joining Manchester United in 2014 after having a successful trial at Old Trafford but the two sides could not agree terms over compensation [h/t Daily Mail].

Despite his early promise, however, the teenage wide man’s progress at the Boleyn Ground has since stalled, and after failing to establish himself in the Under-21s this season, West Ham agreed to let him leave ahead of his contract expiring in the summer.

Once dubbed “the new Gareth Bale”, Villa are said to have been chasing Borg’s signature for some time and will be delighted to landed his services given his obvious potential.

The top-flight strugglers look almost certain to be dropping down to the Championship at this stage, and with a fire sale expected to happen over the summer, the promising speedster could be one of several rookies to see significant minutes in the second tier next term.

Eligible to play for either England or Turkey by way of his grandmother, there very well could be an international tug-of-war over his services in the future if he goes on to fulfil the promise that earned him comparisons to Real Madrid’s Bale not long ago.

Upon reading the topic title I just assumed Villa had signed a young Scandinavian, as that surname is quite common over here. English with a Turkish grandmother? *Swift double-take*. Haven't a scooby about the Turkish language and its origins, but I'd think the English/German equivalent would be Burgh / Berg / Burk. (No, absolutely not berk!) 'Borg' translates as keep / fort / castle, so quite a defensive name, even though he's a winger...

Still, there might be a Scandinavian somewhere in his ancestry to account for that particular spelling.

Those teams are well run. We aren't.

Blackburn once rejected Zidane as they had Sherwood. There are many good players who have been rejected by clubs and gone on to be successful.

Sheffield Wednesday released Vardy when he was 16 and he's doing alright this season.

Besides what do we lose on taking this gamble? Doubt this has cost us much.
