So the inevitable has happened and we're down in the Championship.

Looking objectively at the squad I believe we'll be looking to offload the vast majority due to either their high wages or their own high opinion of themselves.

It will be a major rebuild and the work needs to start now - hopefully with a new manager installed this week to oversee the transition to the Championship.

GKs:

Guzan - SELL. Can see him being moved off to the MLS or become a No.2 keeper (no pun intended) at another Prem club.

Bunn - SELL. Not good enough IMO, certainly no 1st pick.

Steer - RETAIN. Has apparently done well whilst on loan in the league we're about to join. Not sure if good enough to be No.1 yet.

New Keeper required.

LBs:

Amavi - SELL. Unfortunately, regardless of his injury I can see him being offloaded. I would rather he stayed though and then sought a move if things aren't going well for us in the league.

Cissokho - RETAIN. I would honestly keep him, has experience and puts a shift in - he may not be the best Premier League LB but he will do a job in the Championship.

Bennett - SELL. Not going to make it at Villa, never shone whilst on loan. Offload him.

Kinsella - RELEASE. Coming to the end of his contract and out on loan at Kidderminster. Cannot see him being offered a new contract.

New Left Back required - if Amavi is sold in the summer (would look at Rico Henry from Walsall)

RBs:

Hutton - RETAIN. Pretty much for the same reasons as Cissokho. Hutton has been through the mill at the Villa but never grumbled and at least shows 'pashun' on the pitch regardless of his ability.

Bacuna - SELL. He wants out, we want him out. Can see him returning to Holland and his much dreamed Champions League.

New Right Back required.

CBs:

Richards - SELL. Hopefully some club will believe his hype and he moves on.

Lescott - SELL. Not good enough and too many inane Tweets have burnt his bridges with many fans. The MLS beckons.

Clark - RETAIN. Another who may not be 'Premier League' quality but he quietly gets on with his business. Wouldn't be surprised if someone came in for him after the Euros though.

Baker - RETAIN. Has had a good, relatively injury free season in the Championship. He'll be back more experienced and hopefully wanting to re-establish himself here.

Okore - SELL. It's odd that ever since that newspaper article, Jores has not featured. Think he'll be gone, sadly. Can see a move to the Bundesliga or Eredivisie.

Sulliman/Toner - both young players who should get games next season but maybe still too soon to be reliant on them all campaign.

New Centre Back (or two) required.

LMs:

N'Zogbia - RELEASE. Out of contract (finally) Frees up some huge wages.

Richardson - RELEASE. Out of contract, surely won't be offered another.

Grealish - RETAIN. Big season for Jack next year. Needs to knuckle down and concetrate on football not the social. Hopefully will do better without negative influences in the club.

Sinclair - SELL. Only cost £2m but that now looks steep! Can see him getting another Prem team slot (albeit on the bench) but believe he could be an asset (with the right tactics/management) for us next season. Not a priority sell IMO.

Green - RETAIN. Very promising player and broke into the first team this season. Big year ahead.

New LM required.

CMs:

Veretout - SELL. Hasn't matched his pricetag but shown glimpses of what he can do. Can see him being loaned out for a season to a Ligue 1 team.

Gana  - SELL. I like Gana but already his agent is touting him about. Sell him to whoever pays us the most.

Westwood - RETAIN. Not the best CM in the league but not the worst either.

Lyden - RETAIN. One for the future, with a big opportunity next season.

Sanchez - SELL. Not good enough and hefty wages. Nothing against the bloke but he's simply not cut out for it. Back to Spain IMO.

Gil - SELL. Would like him to stay but can see him being picked up by a Spanish team. Championship may be too physical for him.

Gardner - RETAIN. He's played more games in the Championship than the Premier League. Not sure whether he's good enough.

New Centre Mid (x2) required.

RMs:

Traore - SELL. Cannot see him staying on his wages on the back of an injury riddled season. A season long loan could be a decent option for us.

Ayew - SELL. Again, another that will be picked up (either on loan or a permanent). Has shown he can make it in the Premier League and could become a decent player in a better team.

New Right Mids (x2) required.

CFs:

Agbonlahor - SELL. This is the priority sale IMO. He simply has to go, even if it means waiving a transfer fee. Too big for his own boots and has dragged others down to his level.

Gestede - RETAIN. Played his best in the Championship and hopefully will rekindle his goal-scoring form.

Kozak - SELL. Nothing against him but it's not happened for him at the club due to that injury and continuous changes in management. Can see him in either Holland or Germany.

Sellars - RETAIN. Another promising player, will certainly get his chance next season.

Hepburn-Murphy - RETAIN. As with Sellars, could be a useful addition.

New Striker (x2) required - would look at Joe Lolley and Kemar Roofe.

Admittedly that is a lot of business to be conducted, with potentially 11 players needed to come in.

At present - taking out those who are likely to be gone next season, we could see a line-up as follows

................Steer

Hutton.Clark.Baker.Cissoko

Lyden.Westwood.Gardner

.............Grealish

......Gestede.Sellars

Players in bold can stay. Players in Italics will probably be sold.

Guzan
Steer
Bunn

Baker
Bennett
Richards
Okore
Clark

Lescott
Richardson
Hutton
Amavi
Kinsella
Donacien

Cissokho
Toner

Bacuna
Gana
Sinclair
Westwood
Veretout
Gardner
Sanchez
Gil
N'Zogbia
Lyden
Grealish

Agbonlahor
Ayew
Traore
Kozak
Stellars
Robinson
Gestede

All of which leaves us saddled with Guzan, Baker, Richards, Lescott, Hutton, Sinclair, Westwood, and Agbonlahor. Essentially the core of the team that got us relegated will still be here and will likely be starting most games, and of the players I want to stay the better ones will be sold.

I think it should largely be a case of you got us in this mess, you get us out, unless clubs come in and offer proper money for the likes of Ayew.  Then we can spend on a few solid Championship specialists and perhaps a couple of young potential stars, and if we can add a couple of our own youngsters to the first team squad then all the better.

Problem with that is these players don't care.

They don't feel like they owe this club anything. They simply won't put the effort required for promotion.

We had a mass clear out in the summer and that didn't work out so well, can't imagine we'd see that many changes this time around. Plus I think some of our players have a rather over inflated opinion of themselves, they may be in for a rude awakening.

The only positive is that while we were a big club in the Premier League we are a massive, massive club in the Championship that still has some gravity when trying to attract quality players of that calibre.

I'm not sure we have a choice in the matter. One agent has already come out hours after relegation and said his client won't be here next season.

Agree on the last bit though, there really is no excuses not getting quality players in (or a quality manager for that matter) we are still a big club and would be the biggest in that division. Sure we are in the championship now but our recruitment these past couple of seasons has been lower end championship level, Jordan Bowery for example.. I mean even he didn't cut it out at that level.

Who's agent said that already?

I'd get the goalie from Southend, i'd bring Baker back and bring in an old fashioned, aggressive, no-nonsense CH to play alongside him, someone like Collins, i'd keep Okores, and let the rest of the CHs go, i'd try and keep Amavi, if not i would keep Cissokho and buy the LB from Walsall. The RB i would try and get a young RB on loan, someone like the lad from Ure.

Midfield, start again, would'nt retain any of them.Play Lyden, GG, and the young lad we got from Soton, try and bring in a couple of experienced players, maybe Barry, maybe Steve Davis, would like to keep Gana, but not likely to happen, not bothered about Veretout or Gil, would keep Grealish.

Forwards, keep Gestede, let everyone else go, buy a couple of wide players who can score, Nakhi Wells, and Dwight Gayle would be ideal, and another striker, would love Dembele from Fulham, but unlikely.

There are quite a few players i never want to see in a Villa shirt again, whoever comes in, needs to bring in more energy, movement, aggression, passion, good luck with that.

After all the emotion and what not has died down i can only see good things coming from this relegation.  It has to be said that this is what was needed and i believe that the new board could see this and that's why they did not give any funds to Garde.  After all whats the point of struggling to keep a car on the road when eventually its going to conk out, may as well let it conk out and get a better one that you can do up to be better than when you bought it.
