You have to wonder whether if he just got a massive hard on for the military, or whether he sees his department as the solution for everything. Transport Secretary? Send in the buses! Agriculture? Ever since Sir Theresa let him have a go at being defence secretary and wearing long trousers he's just been getting so excited at having all* these toys to play with that he can't stop talking about them to all the other kids. *not actually very many toys, any more. A 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death outside a busy shopping centre in Stratford, east London, shortly after 3pm on Thursday. Five hours later, officers were called to the Brandon Estate in Camberwell, south London, where they found an 18-year-old man with stab wounds. He died an hour later, the Metropolitan police said. Police and witnesses to the Stratford stabbing said the boy’s friends and passersby rushed to help after he was knifed outside a McDonald’s at the Stratford Centre. One witness said: “At that moment there were not many people around him so I could see him all covered in blood. He was in pain and tried getting up. There were people around gathering. It was scary as you did not know if any of them could have had a knife too.” One stall worker said he saw paramedics trying to perform first aid to a “young guy”. “I saw police around here and one person was on the floor, I think they stabbed him,” he said. “It was a young guy. He was a black guy on the floor. I think the ambulance guys tried to give him first aid.” A second boy, aged 15, was also found with stab injuries and taken to an east London hospital, where his injuries were said to be not life-threatening. Police called the incident a “senseless attack” and have appealed for witnesses to come forward. DCI Chris Soole, who is leading the investigation, said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with this young man’s family and friends. They so tragically are having to come to terms with this terrible loss of life. The victim of this stabbing was a schoolboy with his whole life ahead of him. KentVillan Posted October 11, 2019 Share Posted October 11, 2019 Just to put all of this into context, I believe I am right in saying that knife crime levels (measured per unit of population) were higher in the 2000s. This graph below doesn't even normalise over population size, so the rate in the 2002-07 period is much higher than in 2017/18: Hospital admissions for knife crimes Again, this graph below doesn't normalise for population size, so given UK population in 2001 was 59 million, and it is now 67 million (with presumably similar growth in England/Wales), the rate was much higher before: Homicides committed by knife (England & Wales) Clearly things are getting worse in this 2017-present period, vs. the period 2009-2016, but it's not really clear why. Every explanation has a counter-argument: cuts to police numbers - but police numbers were high under New Labour, and we still had a surge cuts to stop and search - plausible, but use of stop and search peaked in 2008, and yet we've had an 8 year period since then when knife crime continued to fall cocaine / county lines / etc - maybe, but I think "county lines" is largely a moral panic cooked up by the media about stuff that has always happened; drug dealing obviously overlaps with criminality and gang lifestyles, but a lot of the stabbings in London relate to postcode disputes that are only tangentially about drug dealing drill music / grime / hip hop / violent computer games / Breaking Bad / etc. - God knows how you prove any of this, but seems a bit unlikely Muslims / terrorism / immigration / etc. - another moral panic, and anyway, doesn't really explain why it would suddenly start increasing now police resources being diverted to other issues - so one argument that I thought might have some plausibility is that the police have been inundated in recent years with reports of crimes that weren't previously reported on a large scale - stuff like hate crimes, online abuse, historic sexual assault allegations, cyberfraud, etc. I wonder if this is the issue. Not only have police numbers gone down, but they face increasing pressure to spread their resources more thinly on "new" crimes. Would be interesting to see some proper research on it, rather than breathless articles in the papers about black-on-black violence. We all know certain parts of Birmingham, London, Manchester, Liverpool, etc. are very dangerous, especially for local teenagers. Follyfoot Posted June 9, 2020 VT Supporter Share Posted June 9, 2020 Really upset me this had, just read about that 16/17 lad in Ireland who got stabbed to death for not handing over his £2 bus fare and was stabbed repeatedly after having a bottle smashed in his face despite onlookers trying to shield his body. The fact he looks the spit of my eldest probably made it hit home even harder, it makes you think of things as a parent that you try not to. I have always been strongly against capital punishment but reading things like this I wonder should there more a deterrent for such abhorrent crimes?
