Sir Neville Marriner passed away in Sunday. Founder of St. Martin of the Fields Chamber Orchestra and best known as the music director for the movie 'Amadeus.'

I had the immense pleasure to play under his baton and share some wonderful meals with him. He was also kind enough to write a letter in support of my green-card here in the US. He was a thoroughly nice, funny and brilliant chap in addition to being from the generation where being an all round gentlemen of the highest order was the most important thing - and that he was. The music will sound much sweeter on the other side now that he's there.

Leading British conductor Sir Neville Marriner dies at 92

  • The British conductor and violinist, Sir Neville Marriner, has died at the age of 92, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields says.

Sir Neville started his musical career with the London Symphony Orchestra.

He later established the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, one of the world's leading chamber orchestras.

Its chairman, Paul Aylieff, said Sir Neville's artistic and recording legacy with orchestras and audiences worldwide was "immense".

"He will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him and the academy will ensure it continues to be an excellent and fitting testament to Sir Neville," Mr Aylieff added.

A statement from the academy said its founder had passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday.

Born in Lincoln in 1924, Sir Neville studied at the Royal College of Music and the Paris Conservatoire.

He first played in a string quartet, then in the London Symphony Orchestra, during which time he decided to form a chamber ensemble from London's finest players.

A group of friends began rehearsing in Sir Neville's front room, before taking their name from the London church of St Martin in the Fields where they staged their first performance in 1959.

The academy, which Sir Neville became life president of, says it now has one of the largest collections of recordings of any chamber orchestra in the world.

Sir Neville has been widely honoured for his work which includes recording the soundtrack for the 1984 film, Amadeus, and becoming the oldest conductor to lead at the Proms, in 2014 at the age of 90.

In March, he was made a Companion of Honour by the Duke of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace, and has also been honoured in France, Germany and Sweden.

Rod Temperton - excellent song writer and musician passed away today. You would see his name on a great many really big hits of 70's and 80's. Wiki him to see the 'who's who' of music who he worked with.

NB - no Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Vibz Kartel et al !!!

Film director Andrzej Wajda died. If you don't know him seek out Kanal, excellent film about resistance fighters hiding from the Nazi's in the sewers during the Warsaw uprising.

Agreed. It's the middle film of a brilliant trilogy - 'A Generation', 'Kanał' and 'Ashes and Diamonds'.

Steve Dillon, the co-creator of Preacher, has died.

Dillon was an artistic prodigy. His first professional comic book work came at age 16, drawing the lead story for the debut issue of Hulk Weekly for Marvel UK.

In the 1980s, Dillon cut his teeth on British comic book magazines WarriorDoctor Who Magazine, and 2000 AD. In 1988, Dillon co-created a new comics magazine titled Deadline, which ran for seven years.

That's a bad one.

Was never my favourite artist, never much liked his style and famously all his characters look the same, but he co-created Preacher and his collaborations with Garth Ennis were unanimously brilliant, so he'll always be a favourite.

Only 54. No age.

Jimmy Perry outside of John Peel (12 years today, always missed) was the single biggest influence on my late teenage years. Hi de hi dictated the career path I would take for 8 years.

Pete Burns will get the headlines today over Bobby Vee. Which is a travesty.

The Bobby Vee singles came out last night.

Very sad :(

Pete Burns passing came as no surprise whatsoever. We were chatting at work that he was looking like a dogs dinner last week.

To be fair, it is by far the most high profile thing he has done in the last quarter of a century.

Sadly looks to be the case considering it appears he's shunning treatment due to his Christian Scientist views.

They don't seem to believe in physical bodies and think that the five senses are complete hogwash, therefore, physical illness is not real but a mental manifestation that can only be cured by prayer...
