Andros Townsend

Newcastle and Aston Villa are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in a potential loan deal for Tottenham's Andros Townsend in January, Sky sources understand.

The 24-year-old winger has struggled to establish himself in Mauricio Pochettino's first-team this season and is keen to get regular football to be in with a chance of making the England squad for the European Championships next summer.

It is understood Spurs' valuation of the player is upwards of £14m - a figure they turned down from Southampton two years ago - and is likely to put clubs off a permanent deal next month.

Southampton are not one of the clubs interested in a move for Townsend, contrary to newspaper reports.

Townsend's future at White Hart Lane has been under increasing uncertainty since he was punished by the club for clashing with a fitness coach in a post-match warm-down in November.

The Spurs academy graduate was made to train with the development squad and told he was not to be selected for the matches against Anderlecht and Arsenal after pushing coach Nathan Gardiner following the home win over Aston Villa.

Townsend has since returned to the first-team squad but has been an unused substitute against West Ham, Qarabag and Monaco, and was not part of the match-day squads at all against Chelsea and Newcastle.

Townsend's current Tottenham contract runs until 2017, having signed a four-year deal following his England debut in October 2013. He scored in his second England game against Ukraine in the same month and has 3 goals in his 10 senior caps for his country.

He has previously been out on loan nine times to Yeovil, Leyton Orient, MK Dons, Ipswich, Watford, Millwall, Leeds, Birmingham and Queens Park Rangers.

Oh Tim signing your Spurs rejects. oh wait :P

Tin hat on. Given our position I'd take him on loan (unless there is a better option available obviously)  Quick, direct, knows the league, point to prove to Woy plus has experience of relegation battle with QPR.

Just so I've got this clear in my mind.

English Manager wants to Buy Andros Townsend, whom he has worked with before, but the board say no (allegedly)

Board go out and instead buy lots of French players, who English Manager doesn't want (allegedly) so the board sack English Manager and employ a French Manager instead.

French Manager decides he would like to buy/loan Andros Townsend. A younger version of a player he seems not to rate (Gabby) and a crapper version of another player that barely gets 5mins (Traore)

I can see a few holes in this particular story.

We bought Bent and then sold his wingers and hired McLeish.

No holes here ;)
