You reckon?  Ground only holds 9,000 or are they obliged to give us a certain percentage?

For cup games the home side is obliged to give up to 15% of total capacity. Adams Park is 9,776 so in theory the away section would be 1,466.  But could be more. The gate receipts is then  divided between both sides plus 10% for the FA.  Sharing of gate receipts  used to occur in league matches until the early 80's as well. Since then the variety of teams winning stuff has dropped. Like us. I need to go out more.

Pretty accurate.

The actual rules for this year (pdf) say

  1. In all matches preceding the Semi-Finals, the Visiting Club shall have the right to claim up to 15% of all accommodation for which tickets are issued providing these tickets are in a fully segregated area, and subject to the following regulations...

    1. In matches played in the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Rounds of the Competition Proper involving Clubs outside the FA Premier League or The Football League, the net gate receipts of each match shall be divided as follows:

50% to Clubs outside The FA Premier League or The Football League.

40% to FA Premier League or Football League Clubs.

10% to the Pool (save where both Clubs are outside the FA Premier League or the Football League).

    1. (e)  In replayed matches in the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Rounds of the Competition Proper involving Clubs outside the FA Premier League or The Football League, the net gate receipts of each match shall be divided as follows:

47.5% to Clubs outside The FA Premier League or The Football League. 37.5% to FA Premier League or Football League Clubs.

10% to the Pool (save where both Clubs are outside The FA Premier League or The Football League).

      5% to The Association.

costs are deducted before it's all divided up, as well. Police, away team travel, stewards etc.

I sometimes think that when Villa get sub 20,000 crowds at home in the early rounds if the club actually loses money on it?

Sadly the FA Cup is chicken feed to Premier League clubs nowadays. In which that term Villa are desperately clinging onto.

How could they lose money?  They have to pay the players wages regardless but surely it can't cost us that much to actually host a game?
