The Rémi Garde thread

People can bang on about me supposedly being negative for the sake of it like they have for the past 3/4 years.

I stand by that it is mote realism than negativity and need nothing more than the premier league table to support that imo.

I've always wondered why negativity is always repackaged as realism

does not need to be repackaged when we're bottom of the league with 4 points having barely won a game for 5 years.

Banning speaking french? Hmmm. Can't say I see that as a good move.

You are probably right. I mean it definitely makes more sense to have poor communication on the pitch, in the dressing room and at BMH.

In a potentially divided dressing room short of confidence ensuring everyone speaks the same language is absolutely guaranteed to make things worse.

Especially when it's a language none of them can speak. It's certainly it going to help those French players adjust to loving and working in England.

What a fool Garde is, I can't believe he hasn't followed Wenger's example and made everyone only speak French. Ray Palour, Merson and Tony Adams all clearly benefited from it.

So to ensure communication is solid, languages need to be banned?

Surely a better way to increase communication and indeed team morale might be for the English players to help the french players speak English and at the same time gabby and Co could learn another language themselves.

I didn't say languages need to be banned, I rather suspect Garde didn't either but it makes for a good headline especially for certain elements of the media.

Are you seriously trying to argue that the rest of the squad should learn French, despite probably having no grounding in it in order to help these players make the transition. And that that is a better idea than the French players, most of whom already actually speak English and all of whom have at least some English use that language. The language of the country they are now living and working.

Never mind the fact there are more English speakers than French, lets cancel training two days a week and get a language tutor in and they can learn to ask where the bakery is. I'm sure that will help us mark on corners.

What about the other nationalities? Do the rest of the squad need to learn Spanish as well as French?

I'm sorry but this criticism is just a little daft and actually seems like criticism for the sake of it.

Wenger insisted on English back in 1996 and so i'd imagine does just about every other overseas manager working in this country, just as I'm sure is the case all over Europe the domestic language is the language of the dressing room.

How would a little clique of players speaking in French to each other help the morale exactly?

I think you've missed the point completely. I'm not saying that the team shouldnt speak English. I said in an earlier post that it's important to recognise that AVFC is an english club but we should also celebrate diversity.

I'm not for one minute suggesting that gabby needs to or actually could learn French. I'm not even sure he could speak any slower either. What I am suggesting tho is that instead of saying 'the english players need to speak slower' it might have been wiser to say something along the lines of:

'We have a range of different cultures and languages in the dressing room however it's important that we can all sing from the same hymn sheet. The predominant language in the dressing room will of course be English and everybody is working towards that. The english lads are helping out the french lads and I think the english lads are even learning a bit of french themselves'.

That would certainly sound a bit more welcoming than

'The english lads need to speak slower'.

No, I've not missed the point at all. If anyone is missing a point its you and its your own.

Not really sure why you've highlighted that part and subsequently taking it out of context.

Just because gabby doesnt need to learn French whilst he's helping the french lads speak English, it doesn't mean him and aston villa wouldn't benefit from it.

I've highlighted the two lines from you because they completely contradict each other, nothing is being taken out of context.

For me it's a 27 game season starting this weekend, and we need 36 points. We've got to be 100% behind him.

That is 9 wins, 9 draws and 9 defeats. That is a big ask IMO considering it's going to take him a few games to fully get his ideas across. I wonder if it's a step too far considering we've already dropped a lot of vital points from 'winnable' home games this season.

Could any of you see us winning 9, 10 or 11 games this season?

You have to win that amount to stay up, always said our games from Nov 28th to Feb are the crucial ones.

Can you blame us?

We've got a new manager, he's given a 10 minute interview, and you've picked up on one sentence, and twisted it into a negative.

That's not realism. That's cherry picking things to suit a negative view.

I haven't twisted anything. I've merely said that it could have been worded better. And it could.

Yes you have. You said he'd banned speaking french. That's not what he said. Ergo, you've twisted it.

I didn't see the first line highlighted. Yes,  I suppose they do. However what I meant from the first one is that itd be possible for gabby to learn a bit himself. I then read it as you had interpreted that to mean he should learn French, hence the 2nd line that you've highlighted.

For the record. It isn't absolutely necessary that the english players learn a bit of french but I do recognise the benefits of that.

everyone will glean from his actions and demeanour what they want.

for me the initial attraction is the discipline they seem to employ, no matter how passive that is, I think it has been missing.

i don't expect him to run it like Belsen.....but I don't expect to see the team like a bunch of gaggling geese either.

i think he will gradually introduce house keeping measures that will indicate.....no ****ing about here, from now on.

Think we've just gone from a group of Primary school kids losing their shit because a cover teacher has been teaching them for 8 months, only for the headmaster to walk in, relieve the cover teacher of his duties and whip the class into shape.

But you've been negative, confident of our relegation, for years, and we're still in the a Premier League Woody.

I bet at the end of every season you think to yourself "I know I'm right, I know we're going down.. Next year is my.. I mean, OUR year"

We have to do enough to overtake the 3 teams above us, not necessarily get to 40 points.

I've never thought we were going down until this season. Sure I've been worried but nevet believed we wouldn't get out of it.

Unbelievable stuff on here this morning!! Are we really going to continue to pick apart press conferences and post match interviews word by word to find something to moan about.

99% of us won’t mate. In fairness when things are going wrong, as they have for knocking on 5 years now, every fine detail gets magnified and blown out of proportion.

For now though it is a fresh start, a clean slate, and a bit of positivity should be the order of the day for us all certainly as far as the manager is concerned.

To live and work in a foriegn country you most definately need to learn the language at least to the level of understanding whats said to you so that you can feel part of the scenery. And to be able to communicate what you want as not to feel isolated.

this doesnt required an enormous level of intelligence, more the will to want to learn along with the patience and understanding of those around you

After about 3 games this season, I was ridiculed for questioning what TS said in post match interviews. About 2/3 weeks later this whole forum was lambasting him about it.

Nobody is moaning about anything. What he said about the french lads could have been worded better that's all. Had people not been yulijising over the so called genius behind 'the english lads need to speak slower', I probably wouldn't have battered an eyelid.
