Transfer Speculation January 2016

You can't tell what is going on behind the scenes so it's a bit unfair to suggest they're doing nothing, but then based on previous windows they've made a rod for their own back

Going to take a serious sales pitch to convince players to join us, I'd imagine there's plenty going on behind the scenes but also a lot of "no" and a lot of agents trying to get ridiculous clauses in the contracts

At this late stage we are not going to get someone like Benteke but surely there are some strikers that want to get into their national team for the euros that need some game time and are better than what we have at the moment. ?!

We couldn't ensure continuous improvement with investment.

Marca reporting us interested in Christian Santos of Nimjigen, which is a bit strange because he's Venezuelan and the club is Dutch, but anyway...

Which strongly suggests its just nonsense designed to drive traffic to their website IMO.

Erm Marca's a half decent paper, and surely if they wanted to drive traffic they would just make something up about Ronaldo or Messi instead of a foreign club last in their league and some random player.

Someone on here said we was interested in him the other day! Checked his stats he is some goalscoring winger/forward with something like 25 goals last season! Never seen him play though.

Christian Santos might just be the happiest footballer around.

That’s if you’re going by his Instagram page, of course.

Santos, the 27-year-old NEC Nijmegen striker, who has been linked with a move to Aston Villa, certainly loves a selfie.

He’s also fond of scoring goals as he’s proved this season.

So what do we know about the latest player to be linked with a move to the Midlands?

Who is he?
Santos is a goal-getter who can play in a variety of roles across the forward line including wide positions.

He’s left-footed and has played up front and wide left and right during his career.

The Venezuelan international, who plays alongside Albion’s Solomon Rondon for his country, left his homeland aged six when his parents moved to Germany.

He started his career at Arminia Bielefeld before moving to KAS Eupen in the Belgian Second Division.

This is where his career really started to kick off as he bagged 28 goals in 78 games while also providing ten assists.

A move to the Belgian top-flight was inevitable but his big move to Waasland-Beveren turned into a disaster as a serious injury thwarted his progress.

NEC took a gamble on him and this season it has paid off as the 6ft pace-ace has scored 11 goals in 17 games.

Strengths
Santos’ versatility is a big pull.

He can operate on the left and right or through the middle. He’s strong-minded and determined to make up for lost time having missed large chunks of his career through injury.

Also he has an impressive goals return. When he plays, he scores goals and his record backs that up. In 51 games for NEC he’s notched 34 times.

Link to Villa
Reports in Holland are suggesting that Villa have looked at him.

News outlet De Gelderlander report that a number of Championship clubs are also interested.

Likelihood of signing
Villa want a new striker and are looking to strengthen in the wide areas so Santos could be an option.

He’s out of contract in the summer so he will be available for a cut-price fee this month.

He would be an ideal recruit if Villa already have one eye on the Championship, too.
