Why would he be being paid for socialising? I'm confused.

Made sense in my head but possibly only my head.

I was imagining a scenario such as the one you suggested where MP's couldn't get paid for a bit of "consulting" on the side but this lying bunch of imbeciles would still do the work, get paid for it and then pretend they weren't doing any work at all - just hanging out with mates at Glaxo and the money was nothing to do with it.

Maybe too much of a leap on my part but I was just riffing on the theme that a Tory will swear black is white if there's something in it for them.

it would have to be combined with real enforcement of taking no outside work.

If people don't want to change the system, that's absolutely fine and a valid opinion, but then they should shut up about Chris Grayling, because he's not doing anything he's not allowed to do. Why wouldn't he take the job, and why wouldn't they offer it to him. This is the system we currently have, working fine.

Hmmm. I don't favour banning people from having a second "job". Partly on the basis that it is completely unenforceable - I mean to start with, what if an MP wants to write a book, or a newspaper article, or help a charity or work as a Doctor or Nurse, or Reservist - I mean where is the line drawn and defined? who decides - some kind of committee, or do you make it an absolute blanket ban on any paid or unpaid "labour"? Are some jobs are OK and some not OK? So that's part of the reason. The second reason is that I think as a kind of free society, people should be allowed to have more than one role. It used to be(maybe still is) that members of the armed forces were not allowed to do a second job without express permission, but even people paid to be available 24/7 could with permission do other jobs.

But, I do think the likes of Grayling, plus Osborne and others having multiple, high paid jobs while also being MPs needs fixing. Maybe there could be a ban on more than one additional role? So Rosina Alin-Khan can carry on working as an MP and a Doctor (part time), or MPs can also be reservists for example? It won't fix things, but it might prevent some of the worst examples. There's also a code of some sort whereby MPs or Ministers are currently prevented from just jumping into roles for which they had/have a brief - you can't be transport secretary and then jump to work for Northern Rail or British Airways - there's a year (maybe?) time limit or something like that.

Will it also include those working in Westminster?

It won't include anyone, because it won't happen, but it's particularly amusing to imagine where these tests would be processed when there is absolutely no lab testing capacity anywhere in the country.

It's the Daily Heil but...

Former Scotland Yard officer described the incident 'embarrassing' for police

Do they intelligence match the protection officers to the Minister they are protecting?
