Chef wrongly branded sex offender faces removal from UK

A chef from Bangladesh who was wrongly branded a sex offender by the Home Office is facing removal from the UK despite a court finding that officials had incorrectly linked three other people’s criminal records to him and failed to provide key documents to support his case.

Despite hoping to remove him from the UK the Home Office has apologised and offered £5,000 compensation for its errors.

...

In 2019 Home Office officials issued a full apology to Islam, stating in an email to him that he had been wrongly recorded as a sex offender. The email admits that police national computer checks on Islam’s file pertained to three other people.

It states: “After investigating the issue it appears documents relating to three individuals were incorrectly placed on your paper file. A number of processes had not been followed which allowed these errors to occur.”

The document adds: “Although such errors are not common … we recognise that such issues can have significant impacts.”

...

Fizza Qureshi, chief executive of Migrants’ Rights Network, said: “If Saiful had not persevered with his case for nearly 16 years, he would not have known that the Home Office had mixed up his file and wrongly labelled him a criminal. Alongside the Home Office’s errors, they have also failed to praise Saiful’s actions of reporting an exploitative employer. Instead they have chosen to penalise him by pursuing his removal, despite his innocence and courage. We would urge the Home Office to reconsider his case, and offer him leave so he can utilise his skills as a chef, and allow him to rebuild his life.”

A Home Office spokeswoman said: “We are unable to comment on ongoing legal proceedings.”

Today's Cummings blog/recruitment call is, erm, interesting.

It's not really clear whether he is attempting to recruit advisors to the PM's office, government advisors, party advisors, a shadow elite civil service or trying to replace part of the existing civil service.

Whatever it is, I'm not going down the non-official email address route again is the best of moves.

The Representative for Wellingborough is standing to be Deputy Speaker, and interestingly has come out strongly against reducing the number of MP's:

For once, I agree with him. There is no need to reduce the number of MP's, a plan for which no good explanation has ever been offered.

Number 10 refusing to meet political journalists to discuss briefing concerns, says Lobby chairman

Quote

Lobby journalists, a cohort of accredited press based at Parliament, are briefed by the Government’s official spokesperson twice a day – once in the morning and again in the afternoon.

These briefings were previously held in the Lobby room of the House of Commons, but under Boris Johnson’s new administration they have been moved to Number 9 Downing Street as of this week.

...

Of particular concern is that journalists are able to both easily report on Parliamentary proceedings, which typically take place in the afternoon, and ask questions of the Government.

Downing Street is a five-minute walk from the Houses of Parliament but requires journalists to pass through additional security gates. The Lobby committee is also concerned that the Government could turn away members of the press it doesn’t like as a result.

...

Number 10 has said it does not comment on operational matters.

Well, he was a shareholder in the company that 100% owned the company that owned the website but it would appear that his on the record statement was worded so as not actually to lie but also not to give a clear picture of the truth.

Stupid thing was, people already knew, and he knew they knew.

It’s just a game, they couldn’t give a ****.

Same as Cairns in my own constituency, claimed he knew nothing of that collapsed rape trial, internal tory review cleared him. 2 days later he admits he was told about it. But the moment to call him out as a disgrace and a liar has apparently gone.

Same old tories. Liars.

I see that it seems the answer to falling well short of the A&E four hour target is to scrap the target. :)

Edit: Also, they claim they're going ot solve the social care issue by the end of the year. They haven't got a scooby how but Hancock still believes it to be extremely likely.

Stick with the current MO I expect.  Do nothing, say they've fixed it and hope that enough of the country don't bother to look any further.

Then say that any small local issues that people might experience are the fault of foreign scroungers or Brussels.

Why change a winning formula?

Isn't that just about a fairly basic salary in thailand? Minimum wage is 330 baht per day which is about £8.30 so if people are being offered £2.49 p/h it seems that they would be much better off than a job on the minimum. Anyone getting paid £2.49 per hour would be on 17,150 baht per month if they worked a 40 hour week

A police officer only gets 14750 baht per month, a teacher gets around 30,000.

Seems the story is "man offers reasonably well paid jobs"

That's pretty much the takeaway unless your issue is with the concept and practice of outsourcing in the first place but that probably takes you down the British jobs for British workers or MAGA routes...
