Moggmentum is a real thing! :D

Got to admit other than seeing him as figure  of fun on have I got news for you I didnt know a huge amount about him but having heard how he campaigned in Fife in a Mercedes saying "A Bentley would be most unsuitable for canvassing " he's either a comedy legend in the making or more bonkers than Boris

Sounds like an absolute danger.

So yesterday I read a couple of articles online  about how Rees Mogg is becoming the Tory equiv of a Corbyn and somehow appealing to young voters and a dark horse for leader ( I don't actually know if he had ambitions in this area and him being a catholic might make it interesting to boot )

It seems that "being a bit eccentric and posh on Instagram" and "calling your baby something a bit weird" elevates you to something more than your peers.

Did this get much coverage in the papers or social media?

Quote

The NHS has been ranked the number one health system in a comparison of 11 countries.

The UK health service was praised for its safety, affordability and efficiency, but fared less well on outcomes such as preventing early death and cancer survival.

The research by the Commonwealth Fund, a US think tank, looked at countries across the world, including the US, Canada, Australia, France and Germany.

Not in the making! From his accurate and brutal assessments to his expression of indignation when someone says something stupid. he is downright hilarious and always has been.

My problem is that he's too focused on process and so nobody knows it's hes actually able to understand deliverable policy. Either way, imo his more obvious talents are wasted if he's not in some way part of the governance conversation.

Sarah Newton doing a great job during the drugs debate in parliament today.

Apparently alcohol isn't one and our current drug policy is the right course of action, based on (and this is the best bit), the 'best available evidence'   :crylaugh:

The thing with Mogg, which is pretty unfathomable, he is only 6 months older than me.

No, I think you'll find he's at least 170 years older than you.

As for him being seen in Fife, that's only just across the river from Dundee, the headquarters of the Beano, one of whose characters seems to be his inspiration.

Good job Crispin Blunt didn't. Some brilliant speakers throughout.

They're going after porn again. Or, more accurately, they're using porn as an excuse to usher in a power grab. From next year all pornographic sites will be required to verify users age, because parents can't control their children, ostensibly.

Downsides to this? It'll take about a week for a database to be nicked, meaning this basically threatens privacy on all fronts. Also, what would constitute pornographic material? There are legitimate resources (medical, support communities etc) that will deal with material you could conceivably get off to, depending on your preferences, but also are providing information to vulnerable/ill people. And there's also 'legit' sites that host shitloads of grumble.

Upsides? Er... Government has a trial run for control of net access nobody is going to oppose (won't you think of the children!), and...  Well parents get to continue neglecting protecting their children properly. And Tories get a warm Victorian feeling of doing the common good. Cover those ankles girls.

You know already card payment details of some form will be the measure of someones age.

More or less guaranteed. Then you'll have the Heil article when dear little Timmy is coerced, honest, into spending Mummy's cocktail budget on a years subscription to Arse Angels and Dicksome Devils, which, dear reader, has some of the worst smut you can find on Google, at this URL...

And then they'll go for VPNs.

...I swear someone in Whitehall would soil themselves in excitement of they could get porn and terrorism in the save sentence right before they put some legislation through.

To what extent is this technologically possible? I know nothing about IT. I just know that I was able to use a VPN when living in China, is the UK really going to produce a stronger barrier than that?

It's not. They can try to force ISPs to block it by using deep packet inspection but nothing can decrypt SSL packets quick enough to see what's inside.

And if it's fairly easy to use a VPN, the bill won't get anywhere. This crops up every few years but seems to follow the pattern of tech-illiterate older Tory makes a censorship grab on the internet, and by the time it goes anywhere someone with a clue has had a word and told them it's not feasible.

I wrote this in 2012 during one of their previous paranoia episodes and it still mostly stands http://wmdzone.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/prying-daves-folly.html

This government is akin to a racist on Twitter, expelling rubbish directly from their deep, dark fantasies, not allowing the inhibitions to take hold and reign them in. I doubt this one passed the Cabinet Reality Assessment Procedure (CRAP) test before going public

the only changes since then are they tend to do a lot of IP blocking at ISP level now rather than just DNS and the logistics of big data means they can log and analyse what they want.
