This is a crisis that could sink the Government in due course. Could affect over 10m people, including a lot of traditional tory voters.

That one bugs the life out of me - if you bought a Ford and it turned out that the Fords caught fire a lot, Ford would recall them all and fix them to make them safe, the cost wouldn't fall on you. What we have here is a bunch of people fixing their own mistake and then saddling you with a bill for something that they (probably knowingly) sold you with a fault.

I could understand if tenants and owners were taking the building owners and constructors to court and sueing them for the unsafe conditions they've been living in, but the other way around is a downright robbery.

well, sort of as a tangent to that and not sure where else to put this but breaking news half of our country are utter stains on humanity who think personal responsibility is the only reason why bad shit happens

In findings that will raise fears over inequalities in Britain, a study of attitudes by researchers at Kings College London showed a significant minority thought a widening post-Covid income gap between white people and BAME groups would not be a problem.

Unemployment rose to 1.74 million people this week, its highest level in five years and business shutdowns are disproportionately affecting women and ethnic minorities.

in one of the starkest findings, one in eight Britons (13%) said they think black people are more likely to be unemployed and have lower incomes because they “lack motivation or willpower”.

This attitude was held by more than one in five of the Conservative voters polled, compared with less than one in 20 Labour supporters. Overall, 47% said those inequalities are because of discrimination but strikingly racist views remain, with 4% of respondents saying inequality was because most black people have “less in-born ability to learn”

There is a strong belief in meritocracy in Britain – that hard work and ambition remain key drivers of success, and this colours views, even during a pandemic,” the report said. “Despite the exceptional circumstances [of Covid], Britons are more likely to think that job losses caused by the crisis are the result of personal failure than chance.”

he view that individual performance was important in determining whether workers were made unemployed during the Covid crisis was held by 47% of people. Only 31% put it down to luck. Study author Bobby Duffy, professor of social policy at KCL, said this was surprising. By 57% to 39%, Conservative voters are much more likely than Labour voters to attribute these job losses to poor performance at work.

Not just Tory voters though is it - nearly half of *all surveyed* said they thought people losing their jobs due to the pandemic was more likely to be their fault than anything else.

A separate piece of polling evidence I saw today suggested that 75% of people favour closing children's outdoor playgrounds. People in this country are often disgusting, frankly.

Interesting(ish) thoughts on that headline (and the reasoning behind it) in this twitter thread:

To be fair, they’ve had some great reviews lately.

Initially I was impressed by his calm and calculated approach assuming he was just biding his time to put away some of the tap ins that the Tories serve up. He’s not only missed the open goals he’s barely even attempting to shoot.

Labour desperately need a new leader who can capitalise on the shit show by those in power.

Too many people, who have no concept that they hit the genetic lottery and the privilege they have. And I'm not talking just about the elite 1% types.

And these same people, are way closer to those struggling than to those Elites, they aspire to be, but admitting that means they can't look down on others in their warped idea they're above where they truly are.

Everything can change rapidly in politics. Maybe there will be another Grenfell-type disaster, maybe Biden will want to invade Iran or something. But as of the end of February 2021, it looks like the Tories are in a great position. The vaccine rollout is going well, even better than advertised, and basically nobody, with any political viewpoint, feels sad about that; the economy will surely have a rapid rebound in the second half of the year, even if it's mainly a 'sugar rush'. The Chancellor is lining up some popular tax rises, and is seemingly going to announce a policy that might genuinely be somewhat useful in helping first-time buyers with their deposits. Most of the middle-class are sitting on bigger savings than they've ever had before.

One might even wonder if, if the year goes as well as it looks like it might, they might decide to refresh their mandate in spring 2022. Think it's a long-shot still, but not completely off the cards.

Just now, Chindie said:

It really likes Tories deep down.

I just can't see why. What is it that makes people like them so much? Even before the pandemic.

I mean, all public services seem worse off thanks to their cuts. Life expectancy dropped due to their austerity measures.

What the **** makes them so popular?

They got Brexit done, are tough on welfare scroungers, and gave lots of money to temporarily disadvantaged people on furlough.
