Xcom 2

The first of the rebooted games was a real triumph, kept the gameplay of the originals but polished the whole experience in to something more in keeping with current gen gaming. I love the series, but can't say I'll have time for it when it does come out.

Very much looking forward to it. XCOM appealed to me because it made this type of game incredibly accessible whilst remaining extremely challenging. I went through 60 hours of hell finishing this game but was incredibly proud of myself on completion. Bring on more slamming of the keyboard and mourning the deaths of characters I'd become attached to.

First impressions... Good, but why the **** did they make most of the missions with turn limits? Way to remove any strategy from a strategy game Firaxis.. The fact the Steam Workshop already has mods to either remove the turn limit or extend it shows this is a shit addition. You are a guerilla faction and I get that you are behind enemy lines and have short windows of activity, but sometimes you just have to let the gameplay shine rather than stifle it for the sake of the story.

Also they don't explain shit in this game like when your soldier is disoriented they can't hack.. Way to tell me that game, had I known I'd have pushed up another specialist instead of looking like a bad player wasting turns for no reason. Some aspects of this game are a step up over XCOM: EU/EW but others are a massive step back and this game does feel rushed at times. It almost feels like the game was too easy and they panicked and threw in a turn limit for most of the missions to make it harder.

Ah well it's a good game and I'm enjoying it don't get me wrong it's XCOM, it's great even when it's pissing me off, I just hate some of the changes they have made as many of them make the game feel rushed, it's almost as if they knew the modding community with expansive tools on day one would fix the broken game they had shipped.. Seems ultimately they were right as the modding community has already saved this game from one of the games biggest criticisms..

What spec machines are you guys running it on? I've heard performance is pretty poor?

My main specs are;

  • Intel i7-6700K
  • 16GB Corsair 2400Mhz DDR4
  • Zotac AMP! Extreme GTX 980Ti

My performance isn't where it should be considering just last weekend I was running The Division at 1080p Ultra at like 80FPS and I'm only getting 55FPS in XCOM 2, but given the horror stories I'm taking it as a win. I'm hearing turning MSAA which goes up to x8 I think down to FXAA is a huge performance saver I just haven't got around to trying it..

The time limits have really spoilt this for me. Not enjoying it at all.

There are two mods on the Steam Workshop out now. One extends the turn limits to the point where you'll rarely be affected called TimerTweaks I think, the other completely disables the turn limits called DisableTimer I think.. Both don't do anything to turn limits in story missions but I'm okay with that as some turn limits are fine, but when the procedural mission dice roll gives you several missions with turn limits in a row it's overwhelming.. It removes the strategy from a strategy game it's ridiculous.

PC only? Knobs, I love Xcom!

They chose PC as the only platform as they didn't want other platforms to dilute their vision.. I see nothing in XCOM 2 that feels terribly PC exclusive though apart from day one modding and extensive mod tools. They disabled Xbox controller support but the game works flawlessly with the Steam Controller so the game is partially coded to accept some controller inputs. It wouldn't surprise me if after the initial PC release it hits the consoles as all their talk of making it work to the advantages of Keyboard and Mouse it feels the same as it did in the previous release which hit iPad, iPhone, Android, Xbox 360 and PS3 so I wouldn't be shocked if E3 sees an announcement..

I just started this and it's pretty tough. I think limited turns is a pain because it just forces you to rush in and then you get swarmed by enemies. Looks like it could be a good game though.

Don't quote me but I'm sure (at a price) you can remove the turn limit off. I haven't gotten round to playing this yet but Will soon.
