VillaTalk downtime

limpid

Question

VillaTalk will be down for several hours on Thursday starting around lunchtime. When it comes back up, we will be running the new version of the IP.Board software.

There are bound to be problems. Please report them in this thread.

After the upgrade, a process will run reorganising older posts. I expect that old posts will be messed up for some time (probably days) while this completes.

Here's the announcement of the software:

Background
Online communities are a huge part of the Internet. Millions of people around the world use online communities to connect with each other about the things that matter to them. At IPS, we've been facilitating this for over 13 years, working with some of the most amazing and interesting sites. Fan communities such as those provided by Warner Music Group and Live Nation for their artists, sports leagues such as the NHL for their fan communities or Bethesda Softworks for their games all use communities to bring fans together. Business like Evernote use communities to reach their customers on a more personal level. And specialist sites like FindLaw use communities to help people find the information they need. Every day new communities are born and we're thrilled at IPS to be involved with this amazing part of the Internet, a part that we feel makes the Internet great.

Two years ago we started on an ambitious project. We wanted to make our platform even better. We wanted to bring all of our applications together in a tightly-integrated suite with a modern codebase, gorgeous interface and unrivaled experience for users.

Looking good. Does it cost more?

Might want to let them know that they forgot to give us a shout out.

Have you thought about selling things, maybe Villa books etc. I know we used to have a shop, too much hassle I guess? There has to be more ways to make money?

Currently the site is paying for itself. I'm still out of pocket after last year, but right now everything is fine. If the number of concurrent users goes up, so should the revenue. Unfortunately it still means that we have to give the advertisers what they want.

The site will go down at 0800EST which is 1300BST. It'll be down for at least 2 hours.

You'll have to talk to your colleagues :)

Lunchtime.  You're cutting us off at lunchtime.  You can't see the look I'm giving you right now :P

I have 2 hours of meetings starting at 1 (arranged specifically because of this :D )

If VillaTalk isn't working when I get back to my desk there will be hell to pay!

(or I'll just do some work and wait for it to come back. One of the two.)
