Fabregas, like Rooney, has been playing first team football since his teens. Both are starting to show a little wear and tear. It's a little less obvious with Fabregas because he was never an explosive player, but it's definitely visible. Good examples of how young players need to eased into first team football, but it is difficult when they're so good so young.

You can't really not play a player who is good enough at 17 just to stop them fading when they get to 28/29.

There's a difference between not playing a player and easing them in, especially when both Rooney and Fabregas were playing 30+ games a season at 17. Just resting them an extra 10 or so games a season during their late teens wouldn't have hurt them or their teams.

I agree with your point but I'd wait for the season to be over before I'd write off either. They might just have "summered well" and not come back as fit as they should have. Also they are both so important for their teams that it really stands out when they are not playing well.
