Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will miss their game at Manchester City after an appeal against his red card in the 2-2 draw with Swansea was rejected.

The Belgium international, 23, was sent off for denying striker Bafetimbi Gomis a goalscoring chance during Saturday's match at Stamford Bridge.

The Football Association said  Chelsea failed to prove referee Michael Oliver made "an obvious error".

Asmir Begovic, a summer signing from Stoke, is set to deputise at City.

Blues manager Jose Mourinho had refused to discuss the dismissal after the match.

Chelsea, who are the defending Premier League champions, face last season's runners-up City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

I guess only small clubs get punished for frivolous appeals.

My thoughts exactly rodders.  That ban should have been extended.  But I think Mourinho is becoming the new Fergie where the Premier League are a little reluctant to take him on.

The frivolous appeal rule was scrapped a year or so back, or rather changed to make It impossible to increase the ban

It wasn't frivolous anyway.

There was a legitimate claim for that not being an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
