Players believe in their own abilities and sometimes lack the objectivity to say "I've no chance". I think if he was to lose his England place owing to lack of game time then that would definitely constitute a failure (and a very very funny one too). It's hard to define the yardstick in writing but I think we'll have a good feel over the season of whether his transfer has worked out the way he would have liked or not.
