dakid007
People want him to make runs but none of the players will find a pass to him. Sinclair makes good runs and I'm yet to see him found with a matching pass

Yes, he got to the end line and put in several crosses.... they were all woefully overhit. Even the goal was hit past the far post, over Gestede. Gill literally chased it down and pulled a moment of brilliance or it would have dribbled over the touchline for a defensive throw in, like all the others. Still, he is exciting. I would start him as a forward pairing and let him run straight at the goal than straight to the end line for a poor cross. (Then I would rant and scream at him after every match for not putting in the defensive work.) The one that went pretty much across their box (primed for a tap in) wasn't over hit. sexbelowsound
Does anyone think that we have a midfield combination that would allow maybe 2 of 3 from Grealish, Adama and Gil to flourish? I think a combination of Sanchez, Veretout and Gana could allow two of them to work but I still think we'd be light defensively. Maybe they could start centrally and then shift out wide when we lose the ball switching from a 4-3-2-1 to a 4-5-1. I do think its dependent though on all 3 central midfielders holding position. I seriously must have dozed off, or been pacing the other room cursing at the Villa. Do you remember the match time? Really don't want to watch any more of that than I have to, to find it. Naturally I don't remember the match time but given he was on the field for something like 25 minutes it shouldn't be that hard to find.
Ulver
The thing that drives me absolutely barmy about Traore is his love of standing still. You never see him making a run off the ball, he's always stood rooted to the spot awaiting the ball. And then when he gets it, 90% of the time he'll go off on a run, then stop dead in his tracks. As if to say to the defender, i'm now going to ridicule you. Sadly he then largely does nothing with the ball. Why can't he just run with the ball more and stop putting the brakes on ? we saw what happened when he did ...

If he ran alot more with it he could be far more effective. i am sure Garde has noticed this

But it's something that he could work on to improve his game, certainly.
mykeyb
Seems to be the only player we have that can make something happen and for that reason alone has to play.

supernova26
Messi does that stand still thing as well. Sometimes a run just isn't on, even for Adama. Some harsh critics on here but probably not many Villa fans watch La Liga and the more sophisticated leagues. Their Championship knowledge may well be of use next season though. HanoiVillan
Sadly, those of us mere mortals who lack such a connoisseur's refined knowledge of European leagues have to rely on our observations of Traore at Villa in order to analyse Traore at Villa.

OutByEaster? Posted January 7, 2016 Moderator Share Posted January 7, 2016 On the standing still thing, he's absolutely lightning over five yards - he's got a trick that gets him a tiny head start and then he's gone. By getting people standing still he takes away any momentum of the defender and from a standing position he's very difficult to stop. If his trick puts you even slightly off balance he's past you. That's his big thing, beating people from a standing start. He's pretty decent at beating people on the run too, but his physical advantage added to his ability to move the ball mean that from a stopped position he'll beat just about anyone nine times out of ten from a standing position. He knows it and he's comfortable with it. I'd like to see him learn to beat people without the ball, to make runs in behind teams and let teammates find him, there have been flashes of that, but not quite enough yet - I think we'll see more of that before we see the defensive discipline.

I rewatched the goal against Sunderland earlier - just incredible what he can do with a good run. I like the idea of developing his attacking movement off the ball but I think I'd prioritise getting him to press defenders more and track back. As you mentioned, he's a physical beast and could be a real terror if he constantly harassed defenders.
