Jordan Ayew

Tim could have his hands full with both Ayew and Adebayor. Both seem to have a bit of an ego about them. Maybe that's what he thinks we lack.

Very interesting point.  I think you may be correct.  When Major Tim talked about our losing mentality he seemed spot on.  We lack character, we lack characters.  Too many hands on hips, too few lost causes chased.

I was reading an interesting interview with Michael Essien who discussed Mourinho.  Essien made two telling points.  Firstly, Mourinho is all about ego, which is to say certainty, which, when applied correctly, can give a ruthless edge to a potent taskmaster.  And secondly, he disclosed that Mourinho has a brilliant knack of being able to pinpoint the very best method to motivate each individual.  Obviously the two are related.  A colossal ego sculpting the egos of his flock.

It's a leap certainly but with player-management increasingly important the much-derided Sherwood ego could be a real asset.  Problem is, many big egos are like giants.  In their prime they stomp majestically, but when they fall they fall hard.

Anyway, Ayew...

To be honest, Tim doesn't strike me as the type of person who could give a toss about a players ego. Doesn't take crap.

I haven't really seen him play since he left Marseille, but I watched quite a lot of him while he was still there. He always looked like he had a bit of potential but he'll need to of developed very well if it's going to cope in the Premier League, he never really looked a £12m striker (or even 12m€).

My eyes must be playing tricks, I saw loads of varied goals scored in that vid, some of which showed quite impressive footballing vision and athleticism.

Stop watching those videos and telling us anything positive about them! It'll only lead to my heartbreak.

Fully agree, if he was able to get Adebayor on side I'm sure he can handle Ayew. You can imagine Sherwood from the off telling players what he expects & if they aren't showing that it'll be delt with. Edited by mightysasquatch

Who is Jordan Ayew? All you need to know about Aston Villa's strike target

The lowdown on the Lorient frontman including his altercation with David Beckham's hair

Aston Villa's forward line could have a new striker in their midst if the club are able to strike a deal with Lorient this weekend.

A bid believed to be in the region of £9 million has been lodged for Ghana international Jordan Ayew as the claret and blues get on with life after Christian Benteke.

But who is Ayew and what type of player is he? Here's the lowdown:

GOALS

As a goalscorer, Ayew was something of a slow-burner and between 2009-2014 he was unable to make double figures in a Ligue 1 campaign.

But that changed last season when he hit the net 13 times, playing a vital part in keeping Lorient in the French top flight.

When he was at Marseille he was a temporary team-mate of a certain Joey Barton, whop was there in the 2012-13 campaign.

Reaction: What the fans are saying about Ayew

Ayew made an impression on Barton, who described him as the best finisher at the club.

High praise indeed as strikers including André-Pierre Gignac and Loic Remy were at OM at that time.

Check out his goals and assists from last season

RECORD BREAKER

He may have picked up something from Barton too, given that he boasts the unwanted distinction of the quickest red card in French football. It happened in February 2013 when Ayew last just 111 seconds on the field. Coming on as a 73rd minute substitute in the 1-1 draw against Evian, he picked up two bookings for two fouls in less than two minutes.

OTHER SUITORS

Swansea have expressed an interest in Ayew, having recently signed his brother Andre, an attacker who has joined on a free transfer from Marseille.

Lille have also been monitoring Jordan, although the player himself now believes the time has come to play in the Premier League in England, and to stand on his own too feet away from his sibling, hence Villa moving to the front of the queue.

ROLE PLAYING

For much of last season, Ayew played up front on his own. He is deceptively good in the air and his heading ability has been likened to that of former Everton striker Tim Cahill. Ayew is actually 5ft 11 so does not lack height and he has started to use it to good effect.

For the Ghana national team he has been used as a second striker behind Asamoah Gyan. Previously he has been criticised for being too selfish, but that appears to have changed last season when he claimed five assists.

OFFEND IT LIKE BECKHAM

Ayew got in David Beckham's hair during an altercation with the former England captain in February 2013. Beckham was playing for Paris Saint Germaine and Ayew was playing for Marseille when they collided near the touchline. There was a bit of a confrontation and an amusing moment when Becks ran his fingers through his golden locks to make sure there wasn't a hair out of place!

FAMILY AFFAIR

He comes from a footballing dynasty. Elder brother Andre we have mentioned already. Their father is Abedi Pele, the former Ghana international midfielder and Champions League winner with Marseille in the early 1990s. His uncles are Kwame Ayew and Sola Ayew, who both played international football for Ghana. Jordan and Andre also have another brother Ibrahim who plays for Asante Kotoko in Ghana.

Ayew's dad Abedi Pele favours his son moving to Villa, and has memories of the club being a force in England during his own playing days around two decades ago.

MOST STUBBORN

Make no mistake, this lad comes with attitude. In a poll by francefootball.fr in April Ayew was named the fourth most stubborn player ever in the history of the country's football.

He polled 12,084 votes, but at least he came behind Barton! His misdemeanours included bragging about his importance to the Lorient team and goading Marseille fans after scoring against his former club.

WHAT HIS REPRESENTATIVES SAY

Ayew's agent Mark McKay of Excel Foot said: "Jordan has had plenty of interest but Aston Villa have made their offer and things are moving quickly.

"Jordan is fast, strong and will suit how Villa like to play. He scored against some of France's top teams last season and has proven himself on the international stage with Ghana.

"I'm positive he will be a big success in the Premier League."

Its the kind of signing we need to start making if we are going to be competitive over time - young, talented, needs developing. Always impressed by him and his brother for Ghana. Do wish it was his brother we'd signed though...Andre has enormous leadership, whereas we will have to be so careful in coaching up Jordan and keeping his head straight from the accounts I've read.

Old Paddy Reilly has been a busy boy.

Pleased with this as one of the two hopefully with Adebayor as the second later in the window.

I suppose Oulare is now out of question, but I'm ok with this (in addition to Ade). Trusting Tim. Edited by AVTuco

People had a got at Lamber for no plan B.  Well we had Benteke and Bent.

Now we have Adebayor and Ayew,  so we've gone from plan b to plan A.

Sherwood out!

Your forgot Agbonlahor...

Perhaps its best that we all forget Agbonlahor.

We got a AAA-rated attack.

Never seen him play so difficult to know what to feel about this one. Looking forward to seeing him in the shirt if we do get it over the line.

Watching the YouTube videos it is impossible to make any judgement based on the types of goals he scores.

I always find the videos where they show all of a players touches in a specific game much more instructive as you get to see how players lose the ball and more of their general play.

When I tried to find something similar for Ayew just came up with one where his nob fell out playing against Germany....

for all the money worriers..

According to Lequipe.

Jordan Ayew (Lorient) interested Aston Villa. The English club, which has sold Christian Benteke in Liverpool (46 million), is largely able to spend the € 10 million requested by Lorient.

Thats alot better than the 12 million pounds!
