Idrissa Gana Gueye

Gueye looked set for Marseille but a number of Premier League clubs made offers and Villa have moved ahead in the pursuit of his signature.

The move would represent one of the biggest in recent years, surpassing the £7million fee paid to Genk for Christian Benteke – the highest price predecessor Paul Lambert was able to pay.

Marseille, Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace have all bid for the 25-year-old but it seems Villa have beaten their top-flight rivals.

Agent Mark McKay, acting for Lille, said: 'Idrissa has a lot of interest and the pull of Marseille is big for any player in France but the lure of the Premier League should outweigh that.

'He is due to speak to Paddy Reilly, Aston Villa's director of recruitment tomorrow and hopefully matters will be concluded.'

Quote from the agent now. Good stuff!

never going to happen he isnt a British player for Brighton or Derby or ex-Spurs

Sherwood knows no foreigners

Well looks like we might be signing this guy, there was the heavily reported interest in the Nice left-back and quite a few other links too. So looks like Sherwood knows one or two players from overseas.

We usually have one big money signing a summer.

2011- N'zogbia

2012- Benteke

2013- Kozak

2014- Well it was going to be Cleverley before the permanent deal had to be shelved, Man. United accepted our 8m bid remember so it was legitimate.

Until he's ITSOTP or ITSABMH I refuse to get excited.

He sounds good so if he does join then it's got to be good news surely even for us on VT ;)

Just as long as it's not money from Delph though.

Aye, Zat is digging for a reaction from those who think Sherwood only recruits English etc. But the agent has said the player will talk to our recruitment guy, strangely, not Sherwood. So it looks like it isn't Sherwood doing the running on this. Zatman, of course, was expecting a reaction and yet he just sounds silly now.

What £8m bid?

The deal was we could buy him for £8m at any time during his loan, doesn't mean that money ever existed or that we ever made a bid, all it means is we had an agreement in principle if we wanted it

Not sure why there was ever so much confusion over the £8m

Why do some assume that this money comes from benteke/delph sale?

You do realise we just had a massive exodus? And I bet this guy will be on 30ish k a week, where as I believe that cleverley must had been on 50ish. Plus weimanns wages, plus bents wages, plus sylla, plus vlaar... It all adds up, so please, if we buy him, and then 2x £ 4 million players followed by a 5 million left back do not assume that we have sold Villa Park.

The £8m bid we initially made before he stalled and we were forced to change it into a loan at the last minute.

Paul Lambert, the Aston Villa manager, has had an £8 million bid for Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley accepted, and is ready to open contract talks with Fabian Delph after his call-up to the England squad.
