No Man's Sky

I think pre-ordering is fine provided you know what you are getting..

UbiSoft, the rule of thumb for that publisher is pre-order provided you are fine not receiving the same level of graphics as the trailers. If you are fine with that you will get 100% the game you expected..

EA, the rule of thumb for that publisher is pre-order provided you are fine knowing that a season pass is required to get the other half of the game. If you are fine with that you will get 100% the game you expected..

Bethesda, the rule of thumb for that publisher is pre-order provided you are fine with a buggy mess of a game for the first 1-2 months of release. If you are fine with that you will get 100% the game you expected..

Activision, the rule of thumb for that publisher is pre-order provided you are fine with the only good aspect of the game being online-multiplayer. If you are fine with that.. You know what I'm getting tired of typing that lol.

The only time I won't advocate pre-ordering and this is something I preach but sometimes don't have the willpower to practice, is when the game is from a more unknown studio. Hello Games would fit into this as they made cute 2D action stunt em' ups with the Joe Danger series, yet nothing to indicate that No Man's Sky would actually deliver. So my rules for pre-ordering is as long as you know what you are getting which you largely do from big publishers then pre-order, but maybe for indie studios unless you have been following their releases then don't pre-order.

damn, I wished I got rid of this sooner. £6 "we buy" price at CEX. six quid!

Skyrim comes out tomorrow, thought I would just check what some of my abandoned games would get to make skyrim cost £0 and wow... £6.

True my friend.

However, whilst I played it to death on PS3, as far as gaming goes, I'll happily do this from start to finish. Truly superb game. Not the only one I've done this for on ps4. I did borderlands 2 to death on PS3 and happily have re done that start to finish probably twice more on ps4!

Borderlands 2? Now that, was one hell of a game. And well worth rebuying. Borderlands 2 and sky rim, they can cash cow me anytime for those

A tweet by Hello Games yesterday read 'No Man's Sky was a mistake'. It was quickly deleted.

Sean Murray then started tweeting, suggesting it was the result of a hack.

It now seems that it was the act of a 'disgruntled employee' which is being dealt with 'internally'.

Oops.

I've pretty much had a similar revelation myself. Sold it yesterday and then spoiled the galaxy centre and atlas path for myself on YouTube.

Massive Ending Spoilers on Atlas and Galaxy centre ahead. Do Not Read!!!!!!

or IMO do read, take some time to take it in and then trade it in and get some money back.

Seriously, Dont read unless you want the game completely spoiled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  Reveal hidden contents

Glad I didn't bother now. Sean Murray should be ashamed of how he portrayed this game.

The Atlas path does nothing. At all. No tangible reward at all. Just that if you hand over the 10 stones you can birth a new star which you don't get to see, go to or hear anything about ever. You hand the stones over then go on your merry way as you were before. No revelation, no real reward. You do get to see where black holes are on the map though but that's it. Pointless, even the bit of text that pops up on handing over the 10 atlas stones is an ironic comment on it all. 'I feel unchanged', yep. I'd rather have had the 900,000 credits the stones were worth. Complete waste of time.

The less said about the "centre" of the Galaxy(ies) the better. I almost got angry when I watched it. You don't get to see anything! You don't even set foot on anything. You engage the hyperdrive to go to the highlighted centre on the galactic map like any other sector and then the camera just zooms out for 2 minutes all the way back to the outer edge again, like the opposite of the loading screen, spins round, finds a new Galaxy and then the game starts all over again in this new (same looking) Galaxy. Same broken ship, same start cutscene. Couldn't believe it at all. There's a guy who is up to 20 galaxies or more so far with no change so I'm guessing its just an infinite loop? Is the social comment from Hello Games to enjoy the journey rather than the destination? Utter utter cop out if so.

Worse than Peter Molyneux and the Curiosity thing in my eyes. The 'ending' and the bait and switch aspect of it all have really pissed me off.

Like I said though, I feel like it's my good deed for the day to advise you to read it just to save you time/money. I'm so annoyed by it.

Would like to add a massive thanks for this.

I bought the game a month ago and pretty much echo the same feelings of repetition as described in these last few pages after about a week of playtime. The sad thing is I spent £34 pre-owned and didn't do my research to the extent I should have.

I spent 10 minutes this morning pondering whether to open that hidden comment as I had every intention of picking the game up again at some point, but am now very happy I did read it. Genuinely think, as an avid gamer, if I had put over 100 hours into this to witness the finale it could have really made me question my love of gaming. Also feel slightly betrayed for the time I did put into it.

Now watching some RDR compilations on YouTube to restore the faith.

Hello Games have broken their silence. They're working on a base building update which will be the first step in a larger update.

Does anyone still own the game?

I still own the game.

Base building likely won't bring me back though because base building goes against the point of the game.

The whole point of No Man's Sky is exploration, but because solitary planets don't offer enough diversity to stay on just one there purpose is solely for harvesting. The game is built around warping from system to system never seeing previous planets again. If I was to build a huge base on a planet only to warp 25 systems away, I am never coming back to that planet meaning I just wasted my time.

So I am glad they are still working on something in No Man's Sky, but base building seems like the most pointless thing to add into a game like this.

For those interested in checking it out. The Foundation Update is now live for everyone that owns No Man's Sky.

The trailer below not only shows off the update in great detail (it's huge), but it also shows a change in marketing style. There is more information in this 6 minute trailer than Hello Games divulged for the entirety of the main game. If anything good came from their colossal fall from grace it's that they are a way more transparent company than before.

Unfortunately, you can't change a bad ending and I think this is what killed the game for a lot of people.

I found the first 20 or so hours fun. I liked picking up information about the world, exploring and learning the mechanics. When I learned that the ending was what it was, I stopped playing. I'd done everything I had wanted to at that point so grinding for a crap ending was never on the cards.

What would bring me back would be enhanced space combat. If you could upgrade your ship a ton, added a bounty system, trade faction relationships and improve the mechanics & Ai it may help. Even throwing a multiplayer system in there that you could warp to would be an idea.

Never a full price release though. If they had kept it sensibly priced, been a bit more open, released it as an alpha with the promise of updates and hired a decent scriptwriter, the base game was good enough to make it a very good title.

So you basically want them to turn it into Elite: Dangerous?!

Full change list for the 1.1 Foundation update

Game Modes

Explorers can now decide to play with different rule sets, across three game modes:

  • Normal mode is the original chilled exploration experience
  • Creative mode allows players to explore the universe without limits, and build a huge base
  • Survival mode really changes the game, creating a much more challenging endurance experience

Base Building

Claim your home planet by finding an uninhabited base and creating your own, fully bespoke outpost.

  • Construct your homestead for shelter, using modular structures and decorations, replicated from resources gathered while exploring
  • Recruit alien lifeforms to help research new technology. Farming, engineer, weapons and science specialists are hirable from Space Stations
  • Use Terminus Teleporters in Space Stations to teleport to and from your base at will
  • Expand your base with storage containers to stockpile precious resources and rare products
  • Find an even more beautiful location and you can simply dismantle your previous homestead to refund all of the spent resources

Farming

  • Cultivate biome dependent crops outdoors, or inside your base or Freighter using Hydroponic Labs
  • Plants grow over time and offer a steady supply of resources to be harvested
  • Hire a farming specialist to research and grow ten new plant types, and discover new resource elements

Making Camp

  • Players can now build essential equipment in the field on-planet
  • Place save points anywhere in the world, crucial for Survival mode
  • Automated Harvesters gather resources from mineral deposits in your absence
  • Waypoints can be placed and colour-coded to allow explorers to return to discoveries
  • Communications Terminals allow explorers to leave sub-space messages for others to find
  • Discover nearby mineral deposits, uninhabited bases or suit upgrades with the use of a Signal Scanner

Freighters

  • Purchase huge interstellar Freighters at great expense, and then summon them from anywhere in the galaxy
  • Resources can be teleported to your Freighter while on-planet, ideal for stockpiling goods for trading
  • Customise the inside of your Freighter within the Base Building section
  • Create extended cargo holds to expand your vessel’s capacity, and grow crops of rare resources on board
  • Transport your Freighter and its cargo to different, more economically favourable systems to maximise your earnings
  • Use the new recruitment system to crew your Freighter with Engineer, Farmer, Weapons and Science specialists to help research new technologies

New Resources and Technology

  • Discover new biome and star specific resource types as you explore the universe
  • Craft the new Advanced Mining Laser and Hazmat gauntlets through base building and use them to gather rare resources
  • Research and discover dozens of new products, building components and technologies

User Interface

The user interface has been improved to accommodate the stress of Survival Mode where a small inconvenience can be the difference between life and death.

TAA and Motion Blur

  • Motion blur has been added to accentuate the feeling of speed, particularly when in-flight. This can be switched on or off via the Options menu
  • Temporal Anti Aliasing (TAA) removes jagged edges effectively and has been added as an option to improve visuals clarity
  • Texture streaming can be enabled, allowing minimum spec PCs to run the game more smoothly (accessible from settings xml)
  • Terrain generation and colourisation algorithms have been revised to produce more aesthetically interesting planets

Goes without saying that it still isn't the game as advertised, but straight away you can see some of the new features may be worth a look. There's actually a lot more in there than I initially thought there was. Also addresses @Daweii's issues with the whole purpose of the game being to explore and move on, so why build a base. Seems the best possible solution really, easy to move to a nicer planet should you find one, able to transport there at will from any space station. Freighters sound like they're exactly the same as bases, but in space, not on planet.

What a shame this wasn't in the game to start with.

Sounds like a very in depth update with far more going on that the trailer let on.

I am glad that they did acknowledge the base/travel issue by allowing the player to teleport to base from any Space Station. That's neat.

I will give it a try at some point this week and see if it's worth diving back into properly.

My son (aged 12) has ditched minecraft for Space Engineers

would this game suit him ?

Possibly, but I don't think this game currently offers as much as Space Engineers does.

Space Engineers from my little time testing it out is almost Minecraft in space. It scratches the same kinds of creative itches just in a completely different setting.

No Man's Sky has just added base building, but it is still early-days and very basic. You basically have pre-created rooms that you snap together like Lego which is neat for a game that never had this before, but it's likely rather primitive compared to Minecraft or Space Engineers.
