How do they sound, Chris? Good?

Yep, I’ve not played much yet, and that might not be their final position, and I have ‘bungs’ for the back if I decide they’re a bit boomy.

But yes, they’re great. They’re the 3010i’s, so I also had a listen to the 20i’s and the 30i’s and there was a detectable improvement at volume as they went up in size and price. Which is as it should be.

They’re in a small room and will rarely be tested at any great volume so they’ll be just dandy for me. More often than not it’s either on quite a modest volume or on semi open headphones.

Certainly distinctly better than the mid 1970’s set they just replaced. They’re half the size of what they replace and I’ve just had to tweak the bass down a little. it was losing a bit of bass that I was worried about but I guess 50 years of technology appears to have sorted that.

I've been obsessed with the Devialet Phantoms for a while now. Probably a long shot but wondering if anyone has any experience with them. Ideally I'm looking for someone to tell me they're not worth the money as I could probably do without blowing a load of money on one but they are beautiful and I'm dangerously close to spending money I could better use elsewhere.

Onkyo, a name I remember a lot, from my days of reading What Hi-Fi, has gone

They also owned Pioneer's home AV business.

Quote

Onkyo shuts down. The once-honoured Japanese hi-fi brand has gone bankrupt. Thus ends a chapter in audio history that has lasted since 1946.....

My first quality receiver was a Onkyo. What a shame :(

My 45 year old amp went pop today. Well, it sort of went crackle crackle crackle pop.

They don’t make anything to bloody last these days.

Do you have someone who can fix it for you?

Annoyingly it could always just be ‘dust’, so I’m not going to bin it for want of a clean. Even if its a few caps, they’re not exactly expensive, I just wouldn’t know what I’m doing. Every time I find someone that is supposedly a ‘hobby’ hifi repairer they end up being really quite specialised and won’t go outside of what they know.

I’ve been on site all day today, I sent out a few texts and emails last night fishing for anyone willing to have a look at it, but no responses yet.

It’s not urgent, I went out the garage, dusted down something else off a shelf and plugged that in instead. So it’s not like I’ve got to watch the tv or anything.

Whilst looking for another amp I actually found an old NAD CD player I’d forgotten I’d bought.

My 70-year-old Pilot radio is still going strong; its not what you might call hi-fi, but I really love Dick Barton and ITMA.

It’s good that the old kit can still pick up the old programmes.

My mum had a coil fitted in 1972 and she still gets Larry Grayson when she touches the washing machine.

Apologies for the inadequacy of my choice of epithets, I was still struggling to control a gag-reflex when he opened the speaker.

Any AMSTRAD that doesn't have the iconic Double Cassette deck isn't worth having :D

I used to have some really nice speakers and amp. The missus came along and they had to go (apparently). They were only 175 watts but the bass was thundering.

I'm stuck with Alexa and ear buds now, sometimes when I'm alone in the house and ironing I turn the alexa thing right up.

Kill me now

The quality of hi-fi has always been a good measure of a relationship.

Quad amps and speakers, a Revox B44 and or a Nakamichi Dragon, and you knew they had a keeper.

I am not sure what an updated list would look like but I suspect it might include some Martin Logan speakers.

My other half, when I said I wanted a new amp, said "go for it".

I also wanted a Beach Boys bootleg LP I used to have decades ago and got offered, she said the same.

I must just be lucky!
