they dont have a divine right to win it but you expect the "best ever" to have a record of 2 goals in 14 knockout games for them in Copa America and World Cup

He does seem to play a lot deeper for the Argies. Even when blatantly unfit Messi along with Mascherano up the other end pulled them through to the World Cup final, he has that much ability that he created most of the crucial moments for them when he was knackered for the latter half of the tournament. It's unreal. It's always Maradona's achievements that Messi has to match for the same few people on here, whilst ignoring the many other parts of the game where Messi has outstripped Diego by miles. Either way, nothing will change my mind that Messi is the greatest ever footballer.

True its not great, it just depends on how you judge a footballer. If its International competitions then you can rule out Di Stefano, Messi, C Ronado. and take your pick from Puskas, Cruyf, Pele, Ronaldo,, Platini, Zidanne and Maradonna.

However I think things have changed a little bit where club football has become more important than International football. (Nobody cares about what Pele did for Santos) In terms of what Messi has done for Barcelona he has few equals. Maybe Puskas for Honved and Real Madrid, Di Stefano at Real and Ronaldo at Real comes close. So maybe on reflection Puskas is the best ever because of his record at club level and International level.

Just realised there's another Copa next summer with USA, Mexico and other gold cup qualifiers included so Messi's probably got three more opportunities to win major international tournaments.

Should be a good one to watch, will probably clash a bit with Euro 2016.

But how many videos does Puskas have on YouTube eh? :detect:

The best player ever is a debate which will never end.  You will always have a group of people who say the guy who's the best in the world today is clearly the best player ever, in 25 years time some guy who might not have even been born yet will be the best in the world and his fans will insist Messi (and Ronaldo) played caveman football and what they achieved didn't count for shit because club football was so unbalanced when they were breaking records left right and centre.

Every generation will cling to their superstar, Maradona will be talked about by people who grew up in the 80s.  Pele will always be a part of the conversation because his time at the top coincided with television exploding in popularity making him the first global megastar (The Beatles and Elvis benefit from this too).   You can't settle the debate because football isn't maths.

And 0 since 2007. It's not like there's much competition at the Copa either. Brazil don't really care about it.
