6 minor parties leaders have signed a document calling for an inquiry in the Prime Ministers truthfulness. Starmer refused on the grounds that Labour don't support motions by other parties. That really is a dick move and not a good look

I wouldn't be surprised if he supported a motion to rim the prime minister at this point.

Completely Off Topic: I just looked that road up (Cos I'm like that) and the next street along is called... Avenue Road. So many topics I could put that in

I used to live next to an Avenue Road (not that one). Stupid name, I agree.

They were bad mouthing Ian Lavery and Jon Trickett the other day on twitter, because they were in Hartlepool campaigning for Paul Williams. As if a two northern, Labour MPs aren't going to go and help out in a constituency 45 mins drive away, because their candidate is more socialist that Dr Paul. I mean I have misgivings about the party's candidate, but I understand the need to campaign for a Labour candidate, if you want to keep the seat away from the grasps of the Tories. The Northern Independence Party is beginning to ever so slightly get on my tits.

They had a tweet recently that they would legalise cannabis and I presumed at the time that perhaps they’d decided the joke had outlived its time and they were going to release steadily more vote losing policies.

Are you sure that legalising cannabis would be a vote-losing policy?

Now, that’s an interesting point (to me).

I think there is a grown up sensible conversation to be had on whether we are a grown up sensible country. Where grown up sensible people can have a relaxing Friday evening with something less harmful than red wine.

But if you just post a graphic on your twitter...

Then I’d suspect other parties can rubbish you as not being serious and trot out all their usual counter arguments and call you irresponsible, IF you ever looked like you were getting any traction with the voters.

Their manifesto says they want more money for mental health, and they want cannabis legalised and other drugs decriminalised. I think the other parties would have well rehearsed arguments on why they were being naive.

But perhaps we’re guilty of giving them way too much attention anyway and they won’t get to the point where the others need to rubbish them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything about NIP. I don't think they're more than a joke (at least at this stage) and I'm pretty sure nobody without a Twitter account even knows who they are.

I'm interested more generally in the question of cannabis, separate from the separatists. My suspicion is that underlying public opinion is moving rapidly on this issue towards liberalisation. The most recent polls I can find on the subject are a YouGov poll from 2019 (https://d25d2506sfb94s.cloudfront.net/cumulus_uploads/document/jebv23n429/CDPRG_190617_190619_Combined.pdf) that had strongly support/tend to support legalisation at 48%, and strongly oppose/tend to oppose at 24%; a Survation poll for the Evening Standard around the same time found 63% of Londoners in favour and a 47%-30% split in favour of legalisation outside the capital (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/the-cannabis-debate-63-per-cent-of-londoners-think-uk-should-follow-canada-and-make-cannabis-legal-a4179291.html). I also see that Sadiq Khan is setting up a review to consider decriminalisation if he's re-elected. Meanwhile over in the States there are more and more states liberalising each time they have an election round, and such noted liberal bastions as Mississippi and South Dakota now have more liberal policies than we do here.

Dunno, I just don't think it's a 'vote loser' to be honest. May not be a 'vote winner' either of course, but I don't think a politician can just call people hippies and consider it job done at this point.

Yep, we’re talking about two different things here.

As I mentioned, there’s a discussion on cannabis to be had, and there’s just posting a legalise cannabis graphic. Which I don’t doubt for a second would get you 250 extra votes so not require any serious engagement from the other parties.

That would anything but be a losing policy. That would be very popular definitely amongst younger voters

Yes, as a policy, it’s certainly done the trick for the Lib Dem’s who are racing ahead in the polls.

Yes, that's right. The Lib Dems are in a shit situation they made for themselves, and that has approximately nothing to do with their position on cannabis.

(Although of course it clearly hasn't been enough to bring them roaring back as a political force either)

They're gonna get round to it. They just need to sit here for a bit, chilling, and then one of them will go to the 24 hour garage for some chocolate and maybe after that...

I was going to make some joke about picturing Ed Davey high, but to be honest I don't think I can remember what he looks like, so 🤷‍♂️
