The Chairman Mao resembling, Monarchy hating, threat to Britain, Labour Party thread

It really does look like Corbyn is going to win now. I think he'll be a basically decent person who ends up being destroyed by the party, and we'll be doing it all over again before Christmas. How is he going to command any loyalty whatsoever, when he rebelled against the whips more than 500 times during his own period on the backbenches? I do really understand the desire for him to do well - on a visceral level, I want him to win - but I don't see any reason for optimism.

I like Jeremy Corbyn and although I don't agree with the prognosis that Labour lost because they were too left, I think it is hugely optimistic to think he could win an election in 2020.

Yvette Cooper is probably the best shout, but I hope that the lessons from this leadership contest, whoever wins, are that authenticity and being unafraid to challenge neoliberal discourse is not strange and irrational but possible and desirable.

This has to be one of the weakest labour contests I have seen in a while. Does not stem well for the future as an alternative to conservative

the only possible saving grace for Labour  is that Cameron will be standing down before the next GE (unless he does a Blair and breaks promises)  and that the conservative party will likely end up with either May or Osborne ...neither of whom will be that popular with the public at large

I suspect though that whoever Unite decide will win the labour contest will struggle to hold the party together and Labours future looks much bleaker than the conservatives

eh?

It's 1 member, 1 vote, AFAIK.

Unite hold very little sway. It's a secret ballot, and all they can do is 'recommend' that their members vote a certain way. This is perhaps the most democratic election of a UK party leader in history.

yeah sure it is and I'm the next Pope  :)

the Unite / Ed Shennighans last time around are well documented as are some of their other democratic selection processes (see Falkirk)

Again, eh?

Ed Miller Group has since changed how the leader is elected. It is now 1 member, 1 vote.

Corbyn was interviewed on Newsnight last night.

I only caught the last 10 minutes, but during that time he said the following:

1. He doesn't see why Parliament has to be in London.

2. He's not sure just bombing bits of the Middle East is a useful way to solve IS.

3. If he was leader of the party he would be ok with individual Labour MP's voting against the whip but for the views of their local constituents.

Last time I caught part of a speech he suggested energy and water shouldn't be in private foreign ownership.

The man is clearly some special kind of dangerous **** idiot.

If he is going to implement these ideas I dont think he will last 12 months as all these corrupt politicians will push him out

I actually do think Corbyn is a decent human being thats why he wont be a success and last the pace within his own party

If they vote May as leader I think labour will win a bigger landslide than conservatives did in the recent election

She is vile

I can't think of a politically philosophy that has failed more often and more spectacularly than socialism, but there can be no argument that Corbyn is a true believer.

If (as looks likely) he is elected it will certainly make politics more interesting - which can only be a good thing.

Capitalism is failing and taking the world with it.

Actually Socialism and Capitalism would both be workable if people weren't such a bunch of grasping mo fos, especially those with influence.

Whatever ism is chosen to take us forward it needs to take these weaknesses into account.

I'd argue that we don't currently have a proper capitalist system, if we had then the debts of the banks wouldn't have been socialized.

However I'm with you on the isms, dangerous little critters.

When the cuts start to kick in then voters could look for an alternative to the usual political elite that have been running all our major parties.

Jeremy Corbyn could be that alternative.
