I think he'll be a basically decent person who ends up being destroyed by the party, and we'll be doing it all over again before Christmas. How is he going to command any loyalty whatsoever, when he rebelled against the whips more than 500 times during his own period on the backbenches? Condimentalist Posted August 5, 2015 Share Posted August 5, 2015 I like Jeremy Corbyn and although I don't agree with the prognosis that Labour lost because they were too left, I think it is hugely optimistic to think he could win an election in 2020. Yvette Cooper is probably the best shout, but I hope that the lessons from this leadership contest, whoever wins, are that authenticity and being unafraid to challenge neoliberal discourse is not strange and irrational but possible and desirable. It's a secret ballot, and all they can do is 'recommend' that their members vote a certain way. This is perhaps the most democratic election of a UK party leader in history. Jez is the person the vast majority of Labour members, not the PLP, want. The PLP will be all in a tizzy after he's elected. Good. I only caught the last 10 minutes, but during that time he said the following: 1. He doesn't see why Parliament has to be in London. 2. He's not sure just bombing bits of the Middle East is a useful way to solve IS. 3. If he was leader of the party he would be ok with individual Labour MP's voting against the whip but for the views of their local constituents. Last time I caught part of a speech he suggested energy and water shouldn't be in private foreign ownership. I'd argue that we don't currently have a proper capitalist system, if we had then the debts of the banks wouldn't have been socialized. However I'm with you on the isms, dangerous little critters.
