bickster Posted August 26, 2021 Moderator Share Posted August 26, 2021 2Bil trees would require 6% of the UK's Land surface, 1.5 mil hectares at a rate of 1,500 trees per hectare Europe is in the middle of tree pandemic of Ash Dieback Disease which further adds to the amount needed to be planted The there is the problem with deer. the UK is overpopulated with deer and deer inhibit tree growth It really isn't as simple as hiring tree planters
blandy Posted August 26, 2021 Moderator Share Posted August 26, 2021 Oh and the maths in the tweet are wrong too. 611,000 a day is the right number over the 20 years from end 2019. **** hippies and their maths
colhint
When people talk of the landmass and must presume it's all flat and there are no lakes and rivers. There is a reason there not more trees in the fells or welsh hills or brecon beacons etc.

HanoiVillan
There's also no reason, by the way, that we have to assume 0 technological progress in tree-planting, eg drones have been shown to be able to plant dozens of times more trees in small-scale demos, such as: It's 2021, I think we can assume there's going to be plenty of movement in technology like this over the next 19 years, it's not all about - or even mainly about, in time - men with shovels. darrenm
Carbon capture of 2 billion trees : Impossible! Where are the 700 people to plant the trees going to come from? Vanity project railway that won't help climate change a lot : 34,000 jobs, 16,000 already employed, massive amounts of land force purchased through compulsory purchase orders I get the feeling that some people aren't very serious about the climate emergency. Quote To date, HS2 has supported 16,000 jobs. We’ve announced 22,000 further jobs, with more big contracts and jobs to come. And, 2,000 businesses have already worked on the project. 95% of contracts are going to UK-based businesses; 60% with small and medium sized businesses (SME) and over 1,000 direct SME contracts. At peak construction, over 34,000 people will be needed to design and build the railway. Over 500 of the 2,000 expected apprentices are already on board. https://www.hs2.org.uk/building-hs2/jobs-skills/

chrisp65
Keir needs to show strong leadership here, do the right thing, and kick the First Minister of the Welsh Government out of the Labour Party. Quote Wales’ First Minister has been criticised for attending an event alongside individuals expelled from the Labour Party. Eluned Anderson, a 21-year-old regional ambassador of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said that Mark Drakeford should not be attending the event. Quote Eluned Anderson said: “The First Minister of Wales should not be sharing a platform with members who have been expelled from the party. The damn state of this.” Drakeford Loach Corbyn Fringe event outside Labour Conference
darrenm
It still blows my mind that Keir didn't kick the guy out of the party who shared a platform with someone who was literally responsible for a million deaths Spoiler Spoiler

Turns out guilt by association is utter nonsense. Who knew? The logic of that is rather lacking, yet another false equivalence. Starmer is supporting the McStrike organised by Hodson and his union. (A good thing) That isn't what Hodson is supposed to have done, he's a member of Socialist Appeal, he even writes articles for In Defence of Marxism, the theoretical Marxist organ of the IMT, he's a Marxist and the Labour Party isn't a Marxist Party, he and the Labour Party are incompatible The guilt by association line is also bollocks, you don't write full on, major articles for IDoM on Marxist theory without being one of the inner circle, this is not guilt by association. It's complete and utter dishonesty Hodson and Socialist Appeal are entryists, they are in the Labour Party for their own ends not for the sake of the Party. They are there to recruit and indoctrinate

dAVe80
This thread is pretty depressing, and shows the fairly depressing state of play in the party at the moment. A total coincidence that Jess and most of the Young Labour Committee are on the left, I'm sure. No platform for Palistine Solidarity Campaign either. Getting harder and harder for me to justify being a member, but then I think that's the point.
