Tony Coton has been appointed as Aston Villa's specialist goalkeeping scout, according to a report by our sister title The Daily Mirror.

Coton worked under Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United’s keeper coach for a decade and will be responsible for recruitment at every level.

He will liaise with all of Villa’s goalkeeping coaches and will work closely with current head keeper coach Tony Parks.

It had been reported that Coton was going to Villa Park as the club’s chief scout.
But the Tamworth-born 53-year-old, who began his playing career with Birmingham before moving on to Watford, both Manchester clubs and Sunderland, will be responsible for recruiting future Villa No 1s.

Coton had been working at Bolton as a scout, but is linking up again with Villa boss Tim Sherwood, a former team-mate at Watford.

Ferguson kept him around for years and worked with Schmeichel and Van Der Sar and he only left that job through injury. I think he could add something, maybe he can get Guzan watch some Van Der Sar videos about kicking :)

Interesting, plenty of people have remarked that Tony Parks is far more involved than you'd expect for a goalkeeping coach on the touchline, he's acting like first team coach so this appointment could lead to him maybe keeping him in that role.

Seriously, how much work is there for a specialist goalkeeping scout?

I imagine he just stares at the keeper the entire game

I think he was known for that sort of thing on and off the pitch in his days at Small Heath.  ;)

Maybe he's helping with coaching as well.

I've been amazed at how involved on match days Tony Parks is. He's at the egde of the technical area more than anybody else and seems to be constantly issuing instructions, which is odd for a goalkeeping coach.

Maybe Parks is taking on more responsibility so we need someone else to work specifically with the goalkeepers/

Don't know about you lot but I want Villa to be signing the best goalkeepers we can at all levels, which is what the newspapers are saying Coton's role will be.

No problem having a specialist, it definitely requires one. Full-time might be a bit much but we don't even know it is.

well you can never not be on the lookout for improvement. Doesnt matter if your Guzan, Benteke or any other player. If possible we can get a better player for good value we should always explore options
