Richard
Sky sources understand Aston Villa have failed in a bid to takeCrystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle to Villa Park, We understand Villa have made a bid for the striker this morning but it has been dismissed out of hand. Our source has described the offer as a 'stupid bid'. Sounds like we are scrambling around for a cheap striker.fixed
Dr_Pangloss
We've utterly failed to replace Benteke, and that really should have been a high priority. We really need to pull something out the bag on this otherwise we're going to struggle again. We need someone to come straight into the first team, perform and match his goals.

Might have to 'go again' with the forward line we've got.

Read that back to yourself. Then remember we're Aston Villa and owned by Randy Lerner. Then the penny will drop that he was never going to be replaced.

useless
We might not be able to replace Benteke like for like, but we should have been a bit more ambitous than Gestede.

What we spent on Gestede and Ayew for instance, could have been used to get a decent replacement for Benteke.

Exactly lots of big clubs over the years have spent a lot more money on big names that still wouldn't have got the goal return Benteke did while he was here. We could have spent the entire Benteke and Delph money on one player and had no guarantee of the same goals to games ratio we had with him.

But you don't replace Benteke as he was when he left, he came to us raw, and it worked out a treat. We still don't know how Gestede and Ayew will do. If we can bring in one more striker, we've realistically done all we could to replace Benteke.

However the 15m he spent on Ayew and Gestede looks like a big error. It's early days but I would Bet neither player will have a huge influence on our fortunes this season whereas a goalscorer with that new look midfield behind Him could have steered us away from relegation to mid table. His sole focus after Benteke left should have been leaving a significant chunk for a striker.
