Marley the Bognor Villan
Just said on talksport about a link to a Columbia defender from River Plate, first I've heard. Sorry, I can't even remember his name as I wasn't listening properly but my ears pricked up when we were mentioned. Balanta? Brilliant on FM
ender4
I've been away for the past 2 weeks, and lots of transfer activity seems to have happened in the meantime. i'm a bit lost who we have signed/not signed/almost signed and what sort of player they are. Would someone be kind enough to list all the players we have signed (ideally with position, rough fee, and club they've come from)? Cheers! rubberman
Interesting to contrast the general optimism over our transfer window on here against the pundits who, across the board, seem to have us to finish 17th / relegation. Not sure whether it's claret tinted spectacles or crapness of pundits. I suppose we'll start to find out soon...
Nicho
Only thing I know about Balanta is FM based, alot of people clamouring for another centre back with experience to marshall the defence. Surely he isnt peoples choice due to being younger than all the others apart from Okore

Daweii
Pundits especially in the UK are paid to keep tabs on British football so we probably got a bit of chatter signing Micah Richards we're not going to get much for Jordan Veretout regardless of how much potential and how hyped he is. The only way we'd get talk of being a threat with foreign signings is if we sign a big name, someone everyone has heard of but then the pundits aren't required to do research to say if it's a good buy or not. With our signings unless the pundits actually watch football outside of Spain and the UK all of our signings will fly under the radar, to many of them all they know is we lost Delph and Benteke and are going down... Popular Post Nigel Posted August 5, 2015 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted August 5, 2015 I've been away for the past 2 weeks, and lots of transfer activity seems to have happened in the meantime. i'm a bit lost who we have signed/not signed/almost signed and what sort of player they are. Would someone be kind enough to list all the players we have signed (ideally with position, rough fee, and club they've come from)? Cheers! heres a quick break down Andrew Gibney is a freelance journalist specialising in French football - and is based in Lille. He is the creator of French Football Weekly and writes for several publications about Ligue 1 such as FourFourTwo, ESPN and ITV. Here Andrew runs the rule over our French-based signings. Q] Tell us about the strength of Ligue 1? A] For years, France has been developing and growing some excellent young players. As the majority of clubs here can't afford to buy star names, they are investing their money in youth academies. Young players know that they will get opportunities to play if they are good enough. You only have to look at Lyon last season, in quite a few games they had seven or eight players from their academy in their starting XI. The league is physical and very technical, making it the perfect breeding ground for youth development. Q] Do you think it is tough adapting to the Premier League after playing in Ligue 1? A] The one thing the players have to adopt to is the pace of the Premier League. Everything is played at 100 miles per hour, whereas in France you have time on the ball and everything is more methodical and disciplined. Physically, players come from France with the best grounding for what to expect in England. Young or old, players arrive with technical skills advanced of their English counterparts, they are tactically aware and ready for their new adventure. Q] So the four players…should Villa fans be excited? A] Definitely. All four have enjoyed excellent moments in Ligue 1. It's easy to see why they were targeted. They are all at different parts of their career and the move to England will be a huge but exciting test. Q] Idrissa Gueye - talk us through his strengths and what he will bring? A] Idrissa is the most experienced of the four. He was part of Lille's squad when they won the French league back in 2011 and he has played in both the Champions League and the Europa League. He is very hard-working and brings a lot of energy to the midfield. Starting as a defensive midfielder, as he played more and more he showed his attacking strengths too - becoming an integral part of Lille's team and has easily been one of their best players over the past two seasons. Gueye tries to do the simple things well, choosing his moments to drive the game forward. He is an all-round excellent midfielder and the way he sacrifices himself for the team will endear him to the Aston Villa fans. Q] Jordan Amavi… Amavi is a young left-back with so much talent. He has the potential to become a France international in the next few years. He has all the qualities to make the move to England work. Amavi loves to go forward and is comfortable on both feet. At Nice, he was quite often the guy who would start the attacks down the left-flank. He can defend too and has height to defend his corner and use it to his advantage going forward. He reads the game very well and made a name for himself by breaking up the opposition play and by making sure not to make any rash challenges. Q] Jordan Ayew… A] The younger of the two Ayew brothers is a bit of a livewire. He is a hard player to pigeon-hole into a type. He is tall, strong and good in the air - but he is not a target man. He is fast and good with the ball at his feet - but he is not going to play on the wing. Ayew is an all-round talent. He definitely has all the raw attributes you would want from a modern-day forward. But he is also very unconventional in his methods. He can finish from long distance but he will be a fox in the box too. Q] Jordan Veretout… Veretout is very technically gifted and became a leader for Nantes at a very young age. He can play as the No.8 in the midfield but is almost just as comfortable in the classic No.10 role. He is able to pick his moments well and is just as gifted at sitting and dictating the play from deep as well as being the focal point of the attack in the final third. He is best suited in the role of playing box-to-box. He is great at bringing enthusiasm, energy and creativity and will be important to Tim Sherwood out on the pitch. Q] Veretout and Gueye are both midfielders - how do you think their roles will differ in the centre? Both can play a number of roles in any midfield. They could play together in a 4-4-2, they could both play deep in a 4-2-3-1 and Veretout could move forward with Gueye deeper in the same formation. Gueye is more defensive and his game is based more on his physicality than his technical side, whereas Veretout is the opposite, although both have the ability to switch it round. They complement each other in the areas where they are less able than the other. Q] They all seem to be a good age and should improve with time? A] Even Gueye, at 25 years old, has the potential to grow into a truly wonderful central midfielder. The challenge of improving and impressing in the Premier League is the next one he'll look to overcome. Both Vereout and Amavi will have the France team in their sights. It may be too soon for either to win a place in the squad for the 2016 European Championships, but a couple of good seasons in England and they could make a case for the World Cup in 2018. Ayew probably has the most to prove. All his career, he has been called a player with potential. He should some great signs at Lorient last season but now it's about sustaining it. Q] Which do you think are suited to becoming fan favourites? If Ayew continues on where he left off and finds consistency in his career, he could be a huge favourite. However, Gueye is one of those players you can't help but love. He wasn't a huge name when he played his first few seasons at Lille, but he grew into one of the fans' favourite sons. Q] Who is the most highly-rated of the four? In terms of potential and the type of player they could become, it has to be Veretout. When you impress in a France U20 squad in the midfield beside Paul Pogba and Geoffrey Kondogbia, you must be highly regarded. He could go on to be a top international player and has all the attributes to become a star in the Premier League. There is always a risk in players moving across the channel, but Veretout could be the one that goes the furthest - although it may take two or three years for him to really show what he can do. Q] If you were to pick similar players in the Premier League past or present, who would you compare the four lads to? Veretout has a similar style to that of Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey. They are no typical No.10 playmakers, but have the ability to do it on both ends. He has the potential to be a game winner while being part of the team ethic. Gueye has the same characteristics as Manchester United new boy, Morgan Schneiderlin. He is defensively sound, but can push forward and could perhaps do it more often. Amavi is similar to Ashley Cole, especially back in his Arsenal days. He is as good going forward as he is in defence. Very much an underrated defender and looks experienced beyond his years. Ayew is harder to nail down. There are elements of Gabby Agbonlahor in him - he can run the channels and look to set up team-mates. However, he is much more of a classic centre-forward. There are not many players like him. Q] Who do you think is most suited to the Premier League? I think Gueye will be the one that settles quickest, but with the way that defending is sometimes a second thought in the Premier League, Amavi could be the one that catches the eye quickest. However, there is a difference to the way that full-backs are taught to defend in Ligue 1. Rarely are they faced with wingers that look to get beyond them and reach the byline. Everything in France is played in front of you. How he deals with this new threat will determine how well he will do this season. Q] Who could be the surprise package? It has to be Ayew. He surprised everyone by scoring 12 goals for Lorient last season. This shows the promise that once suggested he was the more naturally talented of the two Ayew brothers, but it is up to Jordan to take this opportunity and show that it's not just a one-off. clicky
