andym Posted September 1, 2018 Share Posted September 1, 2018 Our defence wasn't exactly standout last season either compared to the other top 6 teams, despite having Terry and Chester and then also often having an extra screening player in front such as Jedinak or Whelan. Plenty of games (usually away) where we looked all over the place systematically, and we conceded our fair share of poor goals. Its just another example of Bruce not bothering much with setup and tactics, and just throwing 11 players out on the pitch and hoping it all clicks, relying on having better individuals than the opposition. The only difference between this defence and last seasons is him. As I've said before, being able to read and anticipate movement and intent is one thing, ability to intervene is another. What Terry brought was mentality, guidance, organisation, leadership and a voice on the pitch as it was all happening. Physically I have my doubts, so as an individual perhaps he is past it.
