When I saw all these new posts I thought that there had been a new development or something. I've managed to convince myself that there's something in this story and we'll be taken over not long after the season has finished.

here's something for you Useless my old mukka:

Some rumours (more than likely 98% bull) going around many facebook Villa groups that someone (As usual these people don't ever give a name) wants to buy us now for £80mil and give Lerner the other £70mil in summer if we stay up!! :D :D if we don't they only pay £80mil for us only!! :D ah what a **** rumour!!!

Well the last two articles in 'The Telegraph' have hinted that whatever division we're to be in next year, the interest will still be there and the only thing that will change is the asking price. But I don't think it'll play out like those people on Facebook say. I imagine that they'll wait and see what happens and then make an offer from there.

Cap squad salary to a percentage of turnover but allow clubs to pay outright fees as long as it's a gift and not a debt to clubs. So basically clubs are run within their means but it doesn't stop wealthy owners spending their own money. FFP must be a big issue for people when they look to buy a club and it must be a restriction of trade really. The new tv deal will change it all for teams in this country not sure whether it'll be for the better though as fear of relegation will magnify even more.

The system I think would work best would be 1 similar to Major League Baseball's luxury tax where there's a set wage limit of say £120m and clubs are allowed to go over the limit but for every pound they go over they have to put the same amount into a central pot which would then get divided amongst the teams that don't go over the limit

So the 2 Manchester clubs could keep their £200m+ wage bills but they'd pay for it as would Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs at a guess and the rest of the league would benefit

It could be applied in each league across Europe with maybe smaller wage limits for smaller leagues

That would be great, but it still kindof runs into the same trouble as other salary capping methods: Unlike MLB, the Premier League competes against other European leagues.

As much as fans, clubs, and the PL itself would like to see a salary cap, I doubt the PL would ever risk it unless the PL had achieved complete dominance of European football.

it would only work if imposed by FIFA and the regional governing bodies. Top down 'ave it.

however with licensing and branding and sponsorship bringing in more money and with FIFA sitting on over £2.5bn in reserves and assets. you can't see that happening.

Salary cap only works in leagues where each team can afford and is willing to spend a relatively equal amount of money.

Saw a lot of posts like this. I am only responding to you because I had to pick one.

I believe this is accurate, but that is why the NBA and NFL have dramatic profit sharing programs. You could also have more of a soft cap like they do in the NBA where teams are allowed to exceed it in certain situations (re-signing your own players, using exceptions, etc.), but any teams that exceeds the penalty has to pay a luxury tax that is progressive both based on magnitude and duration (teams have to pay a larger % tax on the excess salary once it rises over a certain limit and also if they are in the luxury tax area for multiple seasons).

I do believe the soft cap could work in European football, and the profit sharing could allow the lower tier teams to compete.

This makes total sense and should have been what FFP was about. However, it wouldn't guarantee that Europe's top clubs remain in place with their foot on the necks of any club that wishes to and has the means to join them or overtake them which is why it would never be implemented.

If the sugar daddy owner leaves then the club no longer gets any top level signings but its future is still sustainable.

salary cap wouldn't work either. Squad cap however.

you have to register 23 premier league players. Limited to an annual salary of £50m per year.

so if you want to pay someone £500k a week that's fine. But the others will be earning a pot noodle and a twix each week.

Since when did a Pot Noodle and a Twix cost almost £21,000 per week (pre-tax)?

Exactly that's why FFP is a joke it imposes a glass ceiling on clubs who want to gatecrash the party. It'll take a club like Villa being bought out by a man city type owner and them not caring about FFP to get it challenged. PSG and Man City just got in before they shut the shop but will be hit with fines until their CL money sorts their debts out. I think the only way we will have a chance of getting CL football will be getting Europa then winning it then using the extra income to aim for top four in this country. Easy eh???

You qualify for the CL opening round if you win the Europa League

GTFO.

A system that rewards the successful with medicority and the down right hopeless with potential.

Any system that incentives teams to stink the place out in order to progress has to be broken.

Having said all that - given America's aversion all things "lefty" it is a wonderful irony that they choose to adopt a socialist approach to team selection.

As opposed to our system of those with the money getting all the best players...

Draft system would never work, the college system that props it up would never work

The salary cap would work though, do t try and cap individuals cap a 25 man squad, won't stop Yaya getting his £250k a week but it will stop Sinclair rotting in their bench collecting £60k a week, which IMO is the bigger evil

A truely American capitalist system right there........ ;)

I'd love a salary cap and agree 100% with capping a squad salary but I see a problem in implementation. How do you set it? % turnover means you essentially maintain the status quo, and setting an arbitrary value say..... £3m a week for the total squad could encourage smaller clubs to spend up to a limit beyond their means.

The salary caps in mls are horrible. At galaxy you had guys earning in a year what Henry made in 4 days. I make more than a good chunk of players in that league

Yeah that's why I said our only hope of "CL football will be getting Europa then winning it" then using the extra CL money to aim for top four otherwise it's a closed top four in reality unless you have an unreal season like Liverpool last year.
