The Libertarian Thread

I believe myself to be fairly liberal in persuasion. But I'm not sure who classes what as what any more as people seem to class liberal as 'left', which I don't think it is. Left is socialist and therefore controlled. Liberal should be by definition centre.

What kind of libertarian are we talking here?

Indeed, pour example:

Libertarian Marxism

Libertarian Marxism refers to a broad scope of economic and political philosophies that emphasize the anti-authoritarian aspects of Marxism. Early currents of libertarian Marxism, known as left communism emerged in opposition to Marxism–Leninism and its derivatives, such as Stalinism, Maoism, and Trotskyism

...and lots more

I am somewhat libertarian and on the left, at least according to this well-known survey. I basically think pot should be legal, the state should stay out of the bedroom, but the state should look after those who can't themselves. On the other hand, I think if you can work, you should.

On the other hand, I think if you can work, you should.

And if you can't?

It just seems a rather trite stance.

Trite? Moi? Shall I ship you my six-volume compendium, My Stray Political Thoughts From Football Forums?

If you can't work, then you should get the dole, and it should be generous, and since you asked, I think you should pay for it.

Yes, I'm a libertarian.

If the old or disabled or children or the 'unlucky' can't stand on their own two feet, **** 'em.

That's isn't libertarian.

That's, at best, the caricature of a right wing libertarian (I'm not sure that it appropriately represents them, tbh).

You forgot to mention that they'll still get "Three meals of thin gruel a day, with an onion twice a week, and half a roll on Saturdays," right?

On all those political quadrant thingies, I always come out as Left Libertarian.

i.e. in favour of state control in matters of the economy, utilities, etc., but minimal state interference in matters of lifestyle, sexuality, etc.

Rightwing libertarians would be the diametric opposite.

Same here though I'm not really a great believer in political philosophies as I prefer a more pragmatic approach to political thinking. Each of societies problems will have a unique solution which shouldn't be based on some sort of political point scoring exercise
