Mr_Dogg
Bertrand cost Southampton £10 million! Wasn't his contract up in the summer? Or am I mistaken? Anyway, more big money for Chelsea.
The_Rev
No, he was under contract until the end of the 2016/17 season at Chelsea.
Zatman
Still a bit of a steal from Chelsea, not worth that at all
VillaChris
Think mooted fee was 7m when we signed him on loan so no surprise they've upped it a bit given he's played well. That's how Chelsea tackle and get round FFP, sign a million young players, loan most of them out, say they have no chance of ever playing for the first team and sell them on for massive profit as it seems just being associated with clubs like Chelsea add 5m to the fee. It all adds up to make their accounts a little bit more balanced.
Zatman
well I dont see what Chelsea are doing is wrong, teams have done it on the continent for years, e.g. Udinese sign about 25 players each summer in hope of turning profit on some of them. Also I think they wanted sign players like Lukaku and Bertrand to be part of the squad but unfotunately they just werent good enough. Only 2 players that really made it back from loan is Courtois and also ironically Matic who they had to buy back
Isa
Bertrand has been one of the best left-backs in the league this season to be fair. A good deal for all parties involved.
Zatman
6 months is no way to judge a player especially a specialist position like left back, he has been average before that and have seen full backs have good short spells like Luke Young even Habib Beye and then go back to averageness

I presume Southampton will justify the fee by saying they have essentially swapped Luke Shaw for Ryan Bertrand and £20m. They can feel fairly happy with that.
