I do think it's kind of funny you can buy a barge/narrowboat that's the exact length to get stuck in what I presume to be a standard width for a canal :D

Dunno if there are any standard dimensions. My mate's got a narrowboat, I'll ask him.

There are maximum widths and lengths to get through locks.

The most common length for a narrowboat is 57 foot. This enables access to pretty much every lock in the country. You can get narrowboats up to 70 foot long but these are restricted to where they can go. 

6 foot 10 is the common width for them. Hence the term 'narrowboat'. You can have a widebeam on some canals that have double width locks.
