Gangs of New York

The Deer Hunter

Id personally say Gangs of New York was underrated. I've heard many people say it was Scorsese's worst film but personally I really liked it. Daniel Day Lewis' performance was one of the best ive seen in my lifetime.

I've got to say with Big Lebowski that it gets better on second (or more) viewing imo

where as there will be blood I think I dislike more every time i see it

There Will be Blood is a masterpiece. The best film of the 00's.

Shutter island is a great book, works so much better and has a much better ending

Agree about Bourne, up is purely the opening sequence which IMO is as good as anything Pixar have done, the rest of it is just ok, the lion king I think is more down to it's significance, at the start of disneys 90s golden age after a run of rubbish films (I'll have to check that)

As for No Country, I wasn't aware that it had any sort of reputation.

It has a very, very good reputation (rightly so, it's a **** masterpiece imo) and then there's the 4 Academy Awards, two Golden Globes and it being critically acclaimed by the majority except the rightful opinion of Zatman

;)

Fair enough. I'm not that much of a film buff (as should be obvious), and I never take too much notice of awards, etc. I thought No Country was a very faithful adaptation of a good novel, no more, no less.

Apocalypse now

Brilliant start, but it's boring after that and the stuff at the end with Brando is garbage

It's basically word-for-word the highly-rated literary classic Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, including "The horror, the horror" (in case you didn't know this already). So yeah I agree. Garbage.

Good call on Quadrophenia. I'm a huge fan of The Who, but I thought the film was dreadful.

Quadrophenia is close to the 'so bad its good' category.

But I don't think anyone does 'rate' it do they? Lots of people enjoy it, I enjoy it once every few years, 'where'd the bird go?' is oft quoted and who can resist spotting all the modern cars and shopfronts and clothes etc along Brighton seafront. It's a laugh and a pleasant jog down memory lane. It's a snapshot, we still had municipal baths but people were shagging in the bath at house parties.

There's a shitload to be honest isn't there? But to me it shows why I love movies so much. One man's trash is another man's treasure and all that.

I agree. You've named Mean Streets as overrated but I take almost the opposite view in that anything Scorsese made after 1983 (such as Casino & Goodfellas) is inferior to the films he made before then (Kind of Comedy, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets)

At the same time I can see why someone would prefer the more polished later films.

Usual suspects. 2 hours of boring build up to a twist that would have been amazing if someone did it in real life, but not in a movie.

I liked it on the first watch, but it's totally unwatchable now.
