Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur have been charged by the Football Association for failing to control their players.

It follows an incident during the Premier League match at Villa Park on Sunday - which Tottenham won 2-1.

The FA charge (external) alleges that in or around the 66th minute, the clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.

Both clubs have until 18:00 GMT on Monday to respond to the charge.

Villa striker Christian Benteke was sent off after he pushed a hand into Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason's face.

Television replays appeared to show Mason also pushing his head into the face of Benteke before referee Neil Swarbrick dismissed him.

Villa were leading 1-0 at the time of the incident but goals from Nacer Chadli and Harry Kane helped Tottenham come from behind to win.

On the one hand, at least both clubs are being charged. On the other, surely the incident came about because Neil Swarbrick lost control of the match?

Exactly. If Swarbrick took control and settled down both teams after the Vertongen tackle, the incident in the 66th minute might never have happened. We will never know, of course.

Really there should be a system in place for punishing referees for bad performance.

He really wasnt that bad. Everything he saw (he didn't see the Benteke/mason incident) he got right, and he got half of that incident right.

It's alright blaming the ref, for not having control of the game, when there's about 15 spoilt gobshites making his job more difficult than it already is.

That bit in bold is INCREDIBLY debatable.

It's amazing how the referees are the only one's who are unacountable. Yet they have the most influence on the game.

Surely this must change. We need more transparency with the officials. It's like some secret society, you know? Like the Bilderberg group

or FIFA.

I think your in a very small minority there woody. the ref was very biased to spurs. they could have had three players off but not one of them went. he completely ignored the mason incident not even a booking for him. pathetic.

good i hope they get a few of their players banned, that ref was shockingly bad. lambert should have complained
