Tom Cleverley

With the narrow formations that Lambert likes to play, I wouldn't be surprised to see us playing a 4-4-2 diamond formation, with Sanchez in DM, Delph and Westwood left and right, and Cleverley at the tip of the diamond, behind the strikers. Westwood and Cleverley are different types of players, because Cleverley can play that attacking midfielder role that Westwood can't.

Think a diamond with four out and out central midfielders would leave us serioulsy lacking. Cleverley can play that attacking midfield role from a three man midfield.

Plus If your going to have player play at the tip of a diamond he has to be an absolute specialist at that position. With the players we've got I think the best diamond shape would be Delph and Cleverley wide with Cole at the top and Westwood at the bottom.

But don't think Lambert will play a diamond anyway.

@ Westholmevillain

If you are going to respond to my posts, I would very much appreciate it if you would afford me the courtesy of reading and understanding them first.

My concern is that there is a possibility that Cleverley could be going one way, RV the other. If that were to be the case, it would be 1 experienced player in, 1 experienced player out, leaving the team/squad in a worse position.

If we were to sign Cleverley (which is about as good as we can hope for at this stage) and keep RV then great. I'm personally not a gambler & any connection with Man U at this stage of the window worries me that they might go in for Vlaar. Vlaar is key to our survival this season and is the last player I would want to loose. With that in mind, keeping him is far more important to me than adding to the midfield and as I said, I'll be happy to get through this window with what we have. This doesn't mean I would be suicidal if we are able to bring in another signing.

As a side issue, apart from 2 Januarys ago (the Sylla window), I have never really asked why we didn't buy experienced players. I have been one of the few who have supported the manager in what can only be described as very difficult circumstances. Hardly contradictory is it? You may also wish to get your facts right before randomly responding to people.

Absolutely detest a formation without width.

Especially one with benteke leading the line.

Agreed - no wonder we score so few goals.

And no wonder we struggle at home in one of - if not the - biggest pitches in the Premier League.

Just to clarify, who have reportedly had offers accepted? Is it just Villa, Hull and Valencia? Is the supposed Everton link just 'interest' at this point?

Everton havn't formlally bid/had anything formally accepted yet, but my feeling and that of others @OT is that he'll go there should they come to an agreement.

Fwiw I'd take him, there's been a lot of scapegoat about this one, very much Henderson 2/3 years ago

We make this signing and I'll start to believe the takeover rumours more seriously.

I really wouldn't, Every signing we have made this summer has been viewed\analysed as in indication of whether we are being taken over or not. The Club has been officailly up for sale for almost 4 months - and in reality probably a lot longer - no one has come forward in that time - Lerner recently stated no buyer had been found. Lerner is providing nominal funds to give us the best chance of staying the division.

If Cleverley signs - its another player in the ranks towards our struggle to stay in the prem - it doesn't make the takeover nearer (or further away) - all IMO of course

I just can't see why a player like cleverley would come to a relegation battling team up for sale with a manager in his last year of a contract.

To be guaranteed first team football?

Would he not get that at other clubs interested?

Nice to see you've already given up on our hopes of anything other than a relegation battle.
