Understanding AQA GCSE Results

My son has achieved the following scores in his GCSE S

Biology - Unit 2 Tier H     77 = B

Chemistry Unit 2 Tier H  - 78 = B

Physics Unit 2 Tier H - 79 = B

Naturally he was hoping for A's - I can't make head nor tail of the AQA web site - Can anyone explain these scores - and how close are the scores to 'A' ?

That mark is probably a percentage of the scaled mark. As according to the website the maximums scaled mark is 60 for biology, so it can't be the scaled mark itself.

If it's percentage then it's 80 for an A. So pretty close! I wouldn't take my word for it though

You need to work out the raw mark from the UMS for each subject here. Select (convert multiple marks, not single marks, as multiple marks will show you the full table).

Then this page shows you the grade boundaries for the raw scores.

OK - Thanks .....what are those scores I quoted ? - are those the RAW marks ?

No, they're the UMS marks. Convert them to the raw marks, then look at my second link to see how the raw marks sit in the grade boundaries.

Biology, UMS of 77 corresponds to raw score of 31. Boundary for B is 26-33

Chemistry UMS of  78 corresponds to raw score of 37. Boundary for B is 30-39

Physics UMS of 79 corresponds to raw score of 35. Boundary for B is 28-36

Cheers - seems agonisingly close to an A on all 3 then ? - would you think it would be worth getting the papers remarked ?

[it doesn't affect his choice of A levels - but may effect his uni choices]

Unis should be more interested in personal statement and predicted A Level grades. Which unis Is he looking at?

May be worth asking his teachers if they think a re-mark is worth it, may depend on grades across the school/country.

If they are borderline then sometimes the teachers will be happy to do it. I was 1 mark off a grade in 2 subjects and both were sent for re-marking without even having to be asked. One was changed so I got a better grade, the other stayed the same.
