"After a great deal of speed, but very little pace, The Rise of Skywalker eventually settles down into a boring quest for a magical tetrahedron that does something or other. Rey and her team make for a colourful planet that seems modelled on the Burning Man festival and then another that, seasonally enough, looks to be leaning towards A Christmas Carol."

bwahahaha... a lot rubbish, who knew!

ESB does.

but jedi didn't...(Despite being my favourite as a kid)

so you take the original film, then you add in ESB as one of the best films ever, then you have 7 films that failed to live up to expectation

I think low expectations of RoS will see it through for me, not a clue when i'll actually see it though

I agree. Although the space battle and Luke battling Vader in front of the Emporer was still pretty cool. Of course we’ve all seen too many space battles these days but at the time it was an epic scene.

I think my love of jedi has changed significantly as I've got older, the cynic in me now sees George's merchandise wet dream and the mighty ewok's defeating the empire with sticks and stones

but at the same time as I've matured I appreciated the darkness of ESB more and more to the point that I probably consider it the best film ever made

I think the strangest thing for me as ive matured is my enjoyment of the pod racing scene, I didn't like it when I saw it at the cinema but I think my appreciation for it has grown over the years, especially from a technical point of view, its a cleaner scene than a fair few big budget films manage now 20 years later

im expecting the new one to look stunning, have some good acting, have some incredible set pieces (although the horse riding down the side of a star destroyer will be as bad as the casino stuff from the last one) have characters that I don't really care about with a central story arc that makes little sense as they scrambled to wrap it up (it will have pacing issues and a rushed feel to it)

I think the thing for me that highlights just how wrong Disney have got the main story films is that I actually prefer the prequel trilogy to the new ones. The prequels are filled with just as much shite as the new ones but where it differs for me is that the prequels took us to quite a lot of new and interesting places, cities and worlds that had identities and felt like they fitted in within the SW universe.

The new trilogy has taken us to a few pubs, a few markets, Luke's island and a planet with crystal foxes but all of these places we know nothing about, it's just window dressing. A colour palette swap. One set then another. Sets look cool but I have no idea where they are or what building they are in. I couldn't tell you where Snokes throne room is at all. But it looked kind of cool.

Naboo, Otoh Gunga, Coruscant, Kashyyyk, Geonosis, Kamino and more. They fleshed out the lore and gave a sense of place to these planets even more.

I cant even name any of the locations from the new films apart from Jakku which is just another Tatooine and Canto Blight which has the most apt name ever.

This isnt me raising the prequels to a new level or anything, they still and always will mostly suck, but, for all the faults they still felt connected to the SW Banner. The new ones are like theme park rides with knock off characters and costumes. Fun at times but instantly forgettable.

I really liked it, I thought it wrapped up the trilogy really well, even if it did have to retcon a few things from The Last Jedi. It felt like we got a lot of good scenes together with the leads, who had plenty of chemistry. C3PO was excellent. Lots of fan service, but i'm a fan so I loved it.

I still can't really believe the decision to give another writer/director with wildly different ideas the 2nd movie in a trilogy. Someone really needs to be fired for that stuff up. It's like an episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway where Abrams started a scene and then half way through Clive Anderson piped in and changed what it was all about, and Abrams had to deal with it and carry on.

Just back after watching with the kids.

i went in fearing the worst so was pleasantly surprised with the final episode in the saga.

yes you could pick it to pieces but it was an entertaining spectacle that should appease the vast majority of fans.

the kids loved it - my lad is an Uber geek Star Wars fan!

id quite happily watch it again and just relieved it ended on a decent note.

john Williams should get the Oscar for the score too - it was epic throughout!

Think they did an impressive job of salvaging the mess that TLJ left.

I liked it for the most part, the dialogue was a bit silly even by Star Wars standards and the twist were easy to predict but other than that it was fine.

Be interesting to watch it again to see any details I missed. The amount of fan service was through the roof.

Spoiler

They even managed to get some Ewoks in :D , yup saw that one coming too.

Very solid 7/10

It was a 7/10 for any other film, but because this was the end of the Skywalker story (until next episode that Disney will surely make!) it landed very short for me and I'd give it 4/10. It definately wasn't a good end to the best cinema story of the last 40 years.

I defended the Disney take on SW for a long time, but this just felt like having lost much of the SW feel.

This was a much better film than Revenge of the Sith, but Revenge of the Sith was a better star wars story. One of the posters mentioned places like Kashyyk or Mustafar. Great creations. Compare Mustafar to the planet of the final battle (what was it even called?) and I know which made a better planet for the ultimate Sith face off.

It just wasn't good enough. It really lacked the wow factor, and things like Ray "becoming" a Skywalker... No, I don't buy it.

I loved it. Really after The Last Jedi I had severe reservations going in. Scenes needed a bit more breathing space at times, especially the first act, and the editing could have been better in places but overall I thought it was great. I don't get the critics complaints of over exposition and fan pandering at all.

Came out wanting to see it again, which is something I had no desire to do with TLJ.

Saved is the word. I came out of the cinema feeling satisfied. Some of the *fixes* after the last one was in plain sight but never mind. I did like the arc and closure of the characters.

Spoiler

My biggest annoyance though, Hux. What the hell. One of the main villains and antagonists for 2.5 movies and then, "wahey, I'm the spy", 3 minutes later, executed, gone, forgotten.

What the hell was that????

Good fun, but slow and messy start for 20-30 odd minutes. Once it settled down it was fine. Silly cheesy dialogue, and perplexing bits as per the spoiler above from Tegis but it didn't distract me at the time, although I must say I am not deeply invested in the world so I can't comment on the wider world stuff too much. They did handle Leia very well in the circumstances.

It was something like a 5 or 6/10 for me. I've watched the first 3 films a bunch of times, and saw the prequels at the cinema too, but wouldn't really describe myself as a fan of the series. My feeling about these are pretty similar to the prequels - some great moments, but overall not great. This new trilogy is clearly better produced, but the story is just...well, I don't know if I'd bother seeing another one.

Watched TROS today with my seven year old son. It was not bad and certainly an improvement on TLJ. However, Rogue One is still my favourite SW film since the original three. Not sure if my son really enjoyed it though? Perhaps he’s a little young still and has not invested his time in all the previous films like I have. He just wants to see cool SW action and the dialogue goes over his head somewhat. I’ll give it a solid 6 out of 10.

Now a few thoughts on the film which I’ll put under spoilers, so do not read if you haven’t seen it or don’t want certain plot lines spoilt for you:

Spoiler

Like I said earlier, the Rise of Skywalker is not a bad movie (even if the final space battle did remind me slightly of Avengers Endgame). Not sure why, it just did.

Palpatine’s reintroduction felt kind of unnecessary and no explanation on how he managed to return from his death? Who helped him at the end of ROTJ and following it? How did he create Snoke? Did no one with the force (Luke, Leia, Rey etc) ever sense him or the Sith? However, I suppose we needed a real good baddie in the final film and the Emperor certainly provides it. The Rey/Palpatine link though certainly didn’t have that Vader/Luke tension or wow factor.  Abrams though was trying to clean up Johnson’s TLJ mess and give us an epic finale to SW all in one movie so plot holes were inevitable.

General Hux/spy thing just didn’t sit right with me, but finding and using the old Death Star certainly did.

Flying stormtroopers, red stormtroopers - yep, liked them.

The Leia scenes were done well and I assume she was meant to bring the good back out of Ben Solo instead of Han, but we know why this couldn’t happen. Nice to see Han, Luke and Lando again though.

I almost wanted the final space battle to be bigger and better, but perhaps i’m being harsh and need to see it again to really decide if it was great or not? The boy in me wanted Red Leaders, Gold Leaders, Blue Leaders and Resistance Commanders blowing Tie Fighters away. Red 5 reference and a certain X-wing showing was good.

Finally, I really liked the closing scenes, music score and Rey returning to where it all began for many of us. It was a fitting end. A lump in the throat moment to a great saga.
