Stevo985 Posted May 29, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted May 29, 2014 (edited) Well you can't know. That's why I said, in my comparison with MON, that hindsight is a wonderful thing. It would have to be a gamble. Although, in Pulis' case, there's some evidence to support that. He took Stoke so far, spent a LOT of money trying to go higher and never achieved more than lower mid-table stability. Which would suggest that even with money to try and build a better team, he can't do it. First season without him and they've achieved their best ever finish (and HUghes is hardly a genius) So you could argue that, if Palace have another season or two securing their premier league status, it may be a sensible decision to try and find a new manager based on Pulis' past, even though at that point it would seem as if he was doing a good job. Which he would be of course, but you could argue he probably won't take them any further. But yes, of course you're right. you can never know. it would always be a gamble. And it's easy to say in hindsight. In the Mourinho analogy, I'd say turning a midtable team into a tophalf/top4 team are two very different things. I would say that there are managers who can win the league with a team like Man City or Chelsea but couldn't turn Stoke into a top 6 team, for example. And vice versa. Different managers are better at different things. If Mourinho had had Pulis' record at a midtable club and then gone on to have the success he's had, then it may still show that he wasn't the right manager to take that midtable club further. Zatman
He's done a good job at Palace but it's only been half a season Phil Brown had a good half season at Hull. I know he did well at Stoke too but they had a big budget and perhaps could have done better and at the time he left them his reputation amongst football fans was pretty low. One bad thing about his success so far with Palace is that it could have a bad affect on the style of play as a whole in the league if other managers look at it see that it gets results and try and copy. A sort of rotten apple theory I guess. but the football Palace have played hasn't been that bad. Puncheon, Bolasie, Ince, Gayle are hardly Walters and Huth. He is just playing to Palace strengths like he did at Stoke
TrentVilla Posted May 29, 2014 Moderator Share Posted May 29, 2014 No come on Zatman, Pulis didn't play to Stoke's strengths with what he inherited. He built that team and club in an image of his choosing.
VillaChris
Palace are a lot better to watch than Stoke generally well. He has adapted slightly even if the essential gameplay is still direct. Just amuses me watching a team of his without a long throw specialist.

Con
Palace won 13-1 in a pre season friendly tonight! 5-0 then changed all 11 players at half-time because that obviously wasn't good enough. in all seriousness that has to be a fluke result. they won't create that many chances in the PL. Wait until he builds the team in his vision and starts buying your standard big ***tards like Kenwynes Jones', Crouchies, Palacios', Jeromes and Kitsons at £5-10m a pop.

VillaChris
It was Luke Moore who scored about 7, think it was summer 2005. Palace will stay up as teams don't get relegated under Pulis's watch but they haven't signed anyone of note yet so interested to see who they get in. Dodgyknees
Think Palace will struggle this season. Or Pulis will spend 30m to go backwards.

Con
Is Bannan still there? Not being funny, genuinely curious or if he's been sold. He's on their US Tour and got an assist. Pulis made some changes shortly after the second goal bringing Bannan and O’Keefe on for Jedinak and Ledley as a straight swap in the center of midfield. Barry Bannan was immediately impactful and looked like he had a point to prove. On the 70th minute mark he fought hard to win the ball back, before crossing in for Chamakh who headed home for the third and final goal of the match. http://www.fiveyearplanfanzine.co.uk/features/4952-palace-usa-tour-diary-day-5-eagles-end-tour-with-richmond-win.html In terms of set piece ability Bannan has everything that Pulis wants. He knows how to get the ball into the box. Does that with incredible consistency and his crossing % last year was again outstanding. I'm surprised Pulis doesn't built the team around him like he did Delap. Bannan's got to be better than Delap in his last two seasons.
