The mental health hospital I work at is implementing starting next month that due to staffing issues that certain job areas( I am in included in this) will be required to start doing 12 hours shifts-3 days and 4 off.

Now for me personally,  will not affect me too much in terms of my personal life, even though I do prefer the 8 hours shifts. However, a lot of coworkers are understandably up in arms about this because an 8 hour shift is really in general the only shift they can work due to child care reasons or similar.

I do not really think it should be mandated and/or required to work 12 hour shifts or else.

I love my job but this does irritate me somewhat. Understand the staffing issue but still.

Thoughts on this?

It seems to me that responding to a shortage of staff and difficulty recruiting by making working conditions even worse against the will of many of your current employees is such a poor decision, so likely to backfire, that it can only be made by the kind of manager that will continue to fail upwards.

Private or BSMHFT? I’m looking for an escape from BSMHFT, one of the worst run companies I’ve ever worked for full of dingleberries who fail upwards and policies designed to sap morale. It really is time to get out of healthcare. If only I was good at something else.

Private. They run a ton of hospitals across the USA.Mainly mental health but general hospital's also.

Tbh up till this it has been a wonderful place to work at.However, a new Director of Nursing was hired last month and this is the first policy you try to implement and you've barely even been here? I mean seriously?

We should not be forced to work a shift.Again,I understand staffing may be bad but bound to be another solution.

Just frustrating and I agree healthcare does leave a lot to be desired at times.

I love helping people no doubt but stuff like this just gives me undue stress which I don't need.

Ah sorry, didn’t realise you are in America. I think it’s the old thing of guilt tripping nurses and staff into doing it out of ‘caring too much’. Using the reasons they got into the job against them. Hope you get it sorted out dude.

I do 3 long days a week at the moment but I’m looking to leave shift work behind. I can’t do the early starts and late finishes anymore, plus I hate nights. My mind and body are telling me no.

I am out of there, kit returned, out of office on, all software removed from my phone, and I've never felt such a weight off my shoulders :D

I got offered the other job I interviewed for, but I'd updated my CV online and the recruitment team from the company I previously accepted (before the counter offer) got back in touch to see why I was looking again so soon. They let me know their offer stood, no interview, just "when can you start?".

It's very much an employee's market at the moment, companies are struggling to recruit so much, which no doubt made it much easier, but they're much more forgiving than I am when I previously accepted and bailed before the start date.

Fingers crossed this one works out better, but I have a month off between roles to chill out and do some work around the house.

Watch as much porn and listen to as much death metal as one can take in a month

Working from home is okay, but not so much when you have to teach 20+ half-awake university students at 9am in the morning. Three of which bother putting their camera on (meaning the rest are likely not actively in the lesson), and two (if I'm lucky) will actually engage😂

In-person lecturing can't return soon enough.

That reminds me when I tutored a High School student last year via Skype and right in the middle of the lesson her boyfriend rolled out from under the bed and practically jumped out the window🤣 Never said anything to her parents either🤐

  • 2 weeks later...

Looks like i'll now be back in the office in September, not October. Not a massive problem and only 1 day a week (at the moment, although people are worried they'll push for more days in the new year). Plus i'm taking some leave in September so i'll probably only do 2 or 3 days in the office during the month.

I'm not concerned about going in and seeing people, I think it'll be quite nice, i'm just hoping I haven't picked up any bad habits that I can't shake off when I'm there! No more random whooping and one handed typing!

Well after some soul-searching and thinking long and hard about it, I resigned from my job yesterday.  This was not an easy decision to make as I really loved my co-workers and the types of patients that I worked with.  However, with the new administration that came in not too long ago and some of the changes they made, I just feel it is better at this time to move on and look for something else, even if not in the mental health field, even though that is the field I have been working in for a long time now.

One option I have is to work with a friend of mine at his Jeep repair shop, and I also have just been thinking about becoming a full time tutor since school has started back. Whatever I decide to do, I want to make the right decision.

It sucks that I had to do this, but I really think its for the best.

Do you feel you will unemployed for long?

No, I think with all the experience I have can land a decent job within the next few weeks. In the meantime just for short term bill paying purposes, probably gonna tutor or help my friend out. It stinks but don't regret resigning at all.

Well happy to say that I have an interview set up for tomorrow and one set up for next week. The one tomorrow will be working from home for a mental health service and the one next week is for a teacher assistant at a local high school. I would be pleased to land either one as the money is similar and I know would enjoy both.

In the meantime I have been tutoring the last few days and am really enjoying that. Though I do wish some of the kids would take it a bit more seriously lol.

Any of you lot do any part time work from home? I'm looking to earn a bit of extra cash away from my full time job but ideally it needs to be from home due to family commitments.   Almost all ideas considered lol!

What's your full time job?

I'm a costing engineer for a manufacturing firm.

Ah. I have absolutely no **** idea what that means. I guess what I was getting at is that in 2021, far more jobs can be done remotely so you might be able to top up your primary income with very similar jobs remotely, but I have no idea if that's a job that can be done part time :D

You're far more likely to command a higher hourly rate if you can find part time roles related to the role in which you have more professional experience though, if you get to the point of looking at generic unskilled WFH jobs, it's flooded with stay at home mums, students, and others willing to plug away at minimum wage.

Its not too grand - a basically work out manufacturing costs to produce parts whilst also ensuring the jobs make at least a certain % profit.  It certainly could be done from home, but I'm not sure if it's something I want to commit much more additional time to than I already do.   I take your point on the minimum wage WFH jobs though 👍
