$200 Million Takeover

In July 2009, Cortese conducted the deal to buy Southampton, then in administration, for Markus Liebherr, a German-born, Swiss-based industrialist.[3] Following the completion of the purchase, Liebherr realised that his newly acquired business had no senior management structure, and invited Cortese to take the role of Executive Chairman, with the principal role of developing the long term strategy for the football club and the business.[4] Cortese was appointed a director of Southampton Football Club Limited on 1 August 2009.

When you take over a football club this is what you do Randy!

I love the hypocrisy on VT sometimes.

Nicola Cortese is a banker, not a "football man".  Apparently we all want a "football man" running the day-to-day of our club but now a banker will do.

Wait, wait... what's Paul Faulkner's background again?  Banking?  Hrmmmm....

I think you need to read what Cortese specialised in for 10 years as a banker. Also don't tar every single fan with the same brush. I have never once mentioned that we needed a 'football man' running the day to day of our club.

Although I admit many have.

I just had a heart-warming text from my friend in the media, who said "don't get too down about the news right now, you'll be smiling come July"

So, after my negative comment this morn', I am now lifted again.

If that was my friend they would have told me and if they didnt i wouldnt have been too happy. Like who is anyone to know that your friend told you why you would be happy. If the media know something it wont be long to its leaked

Cortese has long been linked with Milan. I highly doubt he's involved in anything regarding us.

While I agree with the last sentence, he did say that he wants to return to the Premier League and hinted that he may have a position at an Premier League club lined up.

If due dilligence has started this week or late last week, I wouldn't be surprised if there'd be at least some leaks in coming weeks.

I think he is referring to the point of developing a long term strategy.

I never really got the desire for the fabled "football man" myself. You can have a good understanding of football without having a footballing background.

Somebody with a 'good understanding of football' is in terms of a CEO what most fans mean by a' football man' for example Steve Stride.

I have this feeling that Cortese could be linked to us. I don't know why. I've been pretty down about Villa lately and expecting relegation next season. But after watching that Cortese clip I think he could be involved with the takeover.

Oh my god someone has been interviewed saying he likes the premier league! Now I am going to research this and find any tenuous link to us I possibly can. ..failing that I'll just say it's obvious he's I'm for us and shout down at anyone who says otherwise.

I'm a villa fan through and through and would hope for better but the amount of denial on here in the face of so much evidence against what your saying is shocking.

Who was the guy running things when Lerner took over? The one that said expect big signings just before MON signed Marlon Harewood.

Richard Fitzgerald? Had a bust up with MON I seem to recall.

Keen to see some of this 'Evidence' you speak of.

Saying there's no interest and we're doomed to Championship football is as speculative as saying we'll be fighting for Europe next year.

Until the OS categorically says what's happening, I'm open to any theories.

Edit: Typo. Again.

The name sounds familiar. Probably had a bust up after MON made him look a prized plonker with his signings that summer after Lerner had pretty much given him a signed blank cheque book.

Actually saying there is no interest and we are doomed to championship football is currently how it stands as far as we are aware. So it's not speculative at all.
