A Song of Ice and Fire

Has it been established who the Iron Bank is besides an entity in Braavos? Are they backed by a mercenary company or do they just pull the strings with their large coffers?

Just a very, very rich Bank I think, the richest in Essos (I don't think there are any Banks in Westeros).

Taken from the Wiki:

When princes or kings default on their debts or are foolish enough not to honor their agreements with the Iron Bank, the Iron Bank supports new princes and kings to appear. These new princes and kings then honor the previous debt along with paying back the money the bank loaned them in claiming their new power, lest they suffer the same fate as their predecessors.

AFAIK, mercenaries aren't typically used in Westeros, so they usually just back them financially.

Cheers. Was curious of their specific way to make sure they got paid back. Looking at you, Cersei.

Why is Daario Naharis a Stormcrow in the books but a Second Son in the show?

I think I read it was an attempt to try and avoid confusion with the multiple companies. There's like a hundred of them in the book and they didn't want the users to get confused as to which company Daario belonged to.

I'm still disappointed they didn't go with the purple beard and the gold mustache.

There is a lot more to the Iron bank then we have been told. I am certain they have some connection to the faceless men and should have a part of to play in the next two books.

It is implied that they pull strings with their money but how they actually do this will be the interesting part.

So they avoid confusion by condensing the companies yet recast as a completely different looking actor.  I imagine that would play hell with people only used the TV series, I used to find it hard to keep track of everybody,

That also means they have had two chances to go with the purple beard!

Not only do they cast a completely different looking actor, but they completely changed his style too. He just blends in with every other buggar in the show now. I'm pretty sure part of the attraction from Dany is that he's similar to Drogo in certain ways and this guy does not resemble him in appearance or character. I know he hasn't exactly featured heavily yet, but still.

Yeah, I can't imagine why they would cast such a normal looking actor for new Daario. At least I could recognize the old Daario as someone different and based from his episodes, he held a lot more of the 'swagger' that Daario is supposed to have. The new Daario strikes me as too Robb Stark-ish. Also, purple beard. Come on, a lot of them are supposed to have strange colored hair. What happens when they get to young Griff and his green hair?

Strong Belwas is the best character from the books who isn't in the show.  His one on one fight with the Champion of Meereen was one of the best passages in the entire story.

As for Daario, I think the show have made the best of a bad situation.  Ed Skrein (the original actor) was offered the lead role in Transporter 4 so he has left to do that. I like Michiel Huisman (Daario 2.0) though. Mostly because he was great in Treme, but he is a great actor. I think they made enough of a song and dance of introducing him last episode (shit, they even put his name on the screen in writing) to let everybody know there was a new Daario. I dare say they will do it again. Maybe he should shit on the Champion of Meereen if he is the one doing the fighting? That might just work.

Oh yeah forgot that.  I think people are assuming (hoping) he's not because his actual death isn't confirmed.  There's also a lot of rumours that he's a Targaryen and still has a massive part to play but time will tell.

Also, whilst we're discussing the books.  Ramsey Snow, what a bastard!  Makes Joffrey seem like a Mormon.

He's a Targaryen, no doubt about it.

Buuuuuut still a bastard so won't be king. Everyone likes Jon Snuh too much so he'll be dead sadly.

Fun fact: The guy who does the reading for the audio books, Roy Dotrice, plays Hallyne the Pyromancer in the TV show.

He was originally cast as Grand Maester Pycelle but his health meant he couldn't keep up with the shooting schedule.

Speaking of which, sometimes I imagine characters from the books differently.  Oberyn Martell looks like Rick "The Model" Martel in my my head and, very weirdly, Grand Maester Pycelle wears Adidas high tops and has a Flava Flav style clock hanging from his chain. Dunno why. Probably because of Grand Master Flash and 80s rap culture.
