BT to have exclusive CL rights from 2015

It's not broke for the clubs who play in it. It's not broke for the millions of fans who watch it.

It's only considered broken by the fans of clubs who are close but miss out on making it in. It's just sour grapes.

What would be the point in making the Europa league the better competition to watch and participate than the Champions League anyway? That would be dumb.

you wouldn't make it better you would make it balanced

same as why the champions league is broken, absolutely no balance, CL money has ruined football in Europe, you can only spend what you earn yet you have a competition that pays out £20-40+ to 4 clubs (that's not making an allowance for the increase in sponsorship etc too)

how can you say that isn't broken? or sour grapes? yeah its purely because of randy and MON that villa cant compete anymore... im amazed more clubs aren't complaining, but then again from about 8th down you have a league of clubs who are just happy to be there, with villa's mentality slowly but surely slipping in to that too

Also we would never be able to play in Europe if you had Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal etc in the Europa League.

With them guys in the Champions League it leaves space for clubs like us to get into the Europa League.

the Europa league is an utterly pointless competition that no one takes seriously...

we seem to have gone from 2 good competitions and the ok cup winners cup to 1 "great" competition and 1 utter wank one, why is it impossible to go to 2 good competitions again? do you really need 4 clubs from England, spain and Germany in the CL?

what you seem to be missing is that the CL is a so called better competition because the likes of Madrid, Dortmund and Arsenal get to play in it every year despite not winning the league and UEFAs quite blatant attempts to keep it that way, don't you see the elitism that is the champions league and the FFP, or is that just sour grapes too?

Of course it is elitist but if you made it fairer and had 1 club per country it would be much worse.

The Europa League is decent and from next year the winners qualify for the Champions League which will make it more attractive.

They need to get rid of the Champions League drop-outs though.

If you returned the CL to being only champions, the EL/UC would be the big money competition, with 6 clubs from each of England/Spain/Germany. Beyond the name of the competition being targeted being different, there would in all probability be no difference (except that we'd perhaps have been on the right side of the divide, but that's only relevant if it actually is sour grapes).

The interesting thing is whether this leads UEFA to loosen the 4-club limit or expand the CL beyond 32. I don't see the rights increasing by anywhere near this much on the continent, which means that nearly all of what BT is paying will go to British clubs that make the group stage. Up to now, media pool CL payouts for clubs from the big 4-5 countries have been generally even (Juventus and AC Milan last year were exceptions, but that's more because the domestic TV rights were bid on the assumption that Italy would have 4 in the group stage and (at least partly thanks to Juve's match fixing), only two clubs made it, so Juve and Milan each got effectively a double share), but British clubs just got a massive boost (Celtic will probably get more from the CL than Barcelona in 2015!). I'd expect UEFA, strictly to keep British clubs from getting too financially dominant, to let more British clubs in.

If you made the Champions league only for champions the Europa league would actually be the superior competition, that'd be a bit of a problem right?

Was the UEFA cup the superior competition over the European Cup?

It was very much a different era back then.
