I have no complaints. We were the better side for large parts of the game and it just wasn't going to be our day. Martinez made the Osman substitution, and only then did they begin to knock the ball around as you would normally exoect them to. Everton did a good job on us yesterday, the kind of away performance/result that we have been experiencing during this calendar year.

No sour grapes from me, but it did make me think about this financial fair play thing. After all, we were beaten by a side whose two most influential outfield players are players that they cannot afford. Is that financial fair play?

I love the solutions people come up with on here...

The answer to Luna not playing his best, is to 'bring back Bennett', who was atrocious last season.

'We miss Lowton going forward'...we don't miss the terrible defending he had shown before he was dropped.

I'm just waiting for the 'Samir Carruthers and Gary Gardner need to play' comments...or maybe 'give Bowery another shot' even though e has shown nothing so far.

By all means try to think of solutions, but don't try and fix a problem with another problem.

'Bring back Bennett'?! You couldn't write comedy this good...by pretty much all accounts last season he was woefully out of his depth.

Disappointing return of 1 point from 3 games in October, but in fairness Spurs & Everton are pushing top 4 year in year out.  Looking at November fixtures it could define our season: West Ham (A), Cardiff (H), West Brom (A), Sunderland (H).  On paper (I know) the harder games are away from home where we're better, so I personally will be disappointed with anything less that 12 points in November ;-)

We were unlucky yesterday, and on another day (with a different referee or a sharper Benteke maybe) we would've won.  Don't be downbeat about it.

So what should people do instead then? Protest at VP?

Fact is on another day we would've got more out of that. Missed penalty, 3 very clear cut chances missed and a sending off that wasn't.

Well wasn't that fun again?

Should have been 3-3  first half but the keepers were top class. Missing a pen is criminal and I knew it was gonna be one of those days.

We also know that Villa can only play one half any good and again we stunk the place out second half.

Midfield is utterly wank. Delph is continuously MotM because everyone else is cack. Westwood is a waste of a shirt. Weimann couldn't hit a Ford Escort with a missile launcher. Gabby was invisible again.

Four defeats from five home games is relegation form. I don't care who the opposition is. Will people make excuses if we lose to Cardiff, Southampton or Swansea?

Masses of empty seats again in the North Lower, and it's only gonna get worse. Watching Villa is **** depressing.

Of course people will be making excuses again. It will be a case of the opposition 'whoever we happen to lose to on the day' were obviously a better side and have spent more money in the summer.

The theme I am picking up reading through some of the posts on here is that we played ok in the first half and were the better side. The thing is, when we are the better side we generally don't win and when we are not the better side we generally don't win so all in all there is something fundamentally wrong with either the manager or the team or both.

Did you not see the post match stats? Everton had more shots and more shots on target. Also had a clear penalty shout against vlaar handball not given. "On another day", if they had taken their other chances, it would've been a far worse result. I'm waiting patiently for this "other day" that we're going to perform for a full 90 and actually take our simple chances.

Yes but we should have been 3 up before they had their first chance

The word 'should' and the word 'did' could be the difference between a relegation scrap and a respectable league finish but for the last few years the former of these 2 words has generally been our theme.

Tonev hasn't featured anywhere near as much as Luna and it's a lot harder to judge someone as not good enough full stop as it is to say one player is better than another player.

You can conclusively judge one player to be better then another from their showing against inferior opposition in pre-season? Ok then...

That isn't what I said.

No but I saw the full 90 minutes and we were very unlucky to lose that. You say "if they had taken their other chances" but that's exactly what they did. Besides that Lukaku chance early in the game that Guzan saved they didn't really create any other clear cut chances. Let's also not forget that Barkley should've been sent off at 0-0 but wasn't.

Most of our players looked like forest gump running across America, why ya running forest?. No brain's in there and no leadership, all everton had to do was let us run out of steam and put Osman on who changed the game with his clever runs and team play.Kick and rush will win some games  but you have to take every chance with this approach. We are too predictable and easy to counter, the two goals yesterday proved that.

Benteke blew 2 chances, Wieman 1 and Gabby 1. Realistically, we *should* have scored all 4. You can't do that and expect to win games.

Clark moving across and leaving Lukaku for Osman who was already surrounded by 4 Villa shirts was criminal.

That said, much better than some of the dross I have seen so far this year - but we gotta find some form. No goals in 3 games now.

Agreed-he should have been sent off. But it seems to be 50-50 with refs these days whether they give the straight red-similar with hernandez for united yesterday aswell. We can't be relying on things like sendings off and the other teams missing their chances for us to win games-we need to be more clinical with our own chances and take any "luck" as a bonus.

No complaints, played very well. On another day would have been out of sight after half an hour. For those who lament our season already is that 8 of the top 10 we have played ?

probably given up going though as I cannot stand our fairweather support which stops singing and either boos or leaves early when we don't win.

How does someone boo that ?

Just sick of it.

Caught the last two thirds on a stream. Not sure of the logic of taking off tonev-looked like he was showing some promise. Weimann had some shocking attempts at goal. It boggles the mind that these lads get paid thousands to play 1-2 games of football per week and this is the tripe they serve up week in, week out. The whole "they spent more money than us" line and the "overreaction" line are really getting boring now aswell. Regardless of showing slight improvement today, we still got beat at home. We should never be satisfied with that just because we created a few chances. Big deal-it should be the expectation that we create at least 3-4 chances every home game.

So what should people do instead then? Protest at VP?

We already did that once and it didn't work lol.

There is no doubt we had enough chances, but to some degree there lies our problem.

There will be days when goal keepers have a blinder...but my worry is on days like this a lack of "ring craft" from particulary Gabby and Wiemann. There first touch was substandard.I also noticed how many goals in the league get scored from the far post, we rarely have players attracted to the far post.

I also think our nous "off the ball" is left wanting.

Osman clearly made a difference when he came on and they just went to create the " oh lay"...which is basically being outplayed.

we have made some progress in our game and in others we havn't.

we need a few players to come in who have a bit of presence and feel comfortable of the ball.

ps  despite the chances we would have had a few more had the front boys been able to receive the ball without it bouncing off them to the opposition.

Problem is if you have been "brought up" on a direct style of football, you will look at the chances missed as the "be all and end all" in my opinion Everton had better "ring craft" they moved the ball, ran off the ball and did all the things to reduce us to loosing shape and chasing the game like a school boy team.

Until we improve our balls skills, I don't see this team going anywhere.

ps no doubt the anti "tippy tappy" brigade will see this as a claim for it...that's not what I am advocating. we need a bit of both, but right now we struggle with the ball skills.

First time I've seen us actually look like a home team.  Heads dropped after the first goal though.

What was Lambert playing at?  Baker and Vlaar were doing a great job on Lukaku and then the former got moved out to full back?  Seriously what has Lowton done?

Tonev's best game for us yet and with him looking like our only threat late on, he gets hauled off.
