What do you drive?

A6? That's a lot of car for a town run around! :D

I used to have a Merc C-Class and that is a lot of car for not a lot of money now.

I know, that's what's putting me off a bit! It's a 2liter, and I don't really need that much poke. Usually my longest journey in a regular week is 30 mins on a 60 mph road.

When I was driving up to Newcastle ever day to work in our office up there, work hired me a Seat Leon. Kind of fell in love with that, but ruled one out for the same reasons. Sometimes you have to be practical! :(

My mate said I should look at A6s. Seen a fairly decent one already. A little older than I wanted, and had 128k on the clock, but it'd had parts replaced recently, and reckons it'd be good for another 60k miles, before it needed much doing to it. At the bottom end of my price range too.

I had one a few years ago. Paid 500 quid for it and it was excellent. Only issue was in multi storey car parks as the turning Circle wasn’t great so going up and down the ramps was tricky, and also it barely fitted in the parking slots. But great on motorways.

Suggestions please...

In the market for a car. Decided to buy a used car, after considering leasing a new car (decided not to in the end though). Not after anything too flash, and have a budget of £4k, pushing to £6k if it's worth paying a bit extra. Looking for something which is mostly going to be a run around in a town, with occasional motorway use. Needs to be roomy, and ideally no bigger than a 1.6ltr engine.

It really depends on your taste but I still own a 2007 VW Passatt estate that I have had for 7 years that has been brilliant. I did go for the 170bhp sport model as I like a bit of poke but  there is a 1.6 in the newer model that does 62 mpg. It’s the only car I’ve had that returnsthe mpg it states as all the other ones have been at least 30% down. I always go for estates due to dogs but the saloons are even better for mpg. Heres one I saw on Autotrader.

they’re also more spacious than an A4 or a C series as we tried them all and had got used to the room in our A6 ( which was also lovely).

I think I've got it narrowed down to something from the VW Audi Group. Probably not going to go as big as an A6 or a Passatt, and thinking I'm gonna go for a Leon / Golf / A3 / Octavia. Plenty of options in my price range, so hopefully going to find something that suits in the next couple of weeks.

This reminds me of a time 30 years ago when I was on my way to a Grateful Dead show in Oregon from Seattle.  On the freeway in the middle of nowhere traffic suddenly came to a complete stop for 10-15 minutes.  A VW bus with young gentlemen looking much like these 3 were ahead of us.  At one point one got out a lawn chair and sat in the middle of the freeway and started playing a saxophone.  A bit later, one decided to go down the embankment to relieve himself.   Suddenly, traffic started moving again and his mates had to start driving off.  As he came back up and saw that the cars were moving and started sprinting after his mates, slowly losing ground.  We were thinking he's f*cked, when one of his mates suddenly leaned out the window and dropped a skateboard on the shoulder, which landed perfectly oriented.  The young lad hit it at full speed without missing a stride and pushed himself along until he caught up to his ride and they opened the door after slowing slightly and he jumped on much like someone catching a cable car in San Francisco in the old days.   You're probably thinking, "so, what?", but to someone who was viewing it through a lens of cannabis, it was a thing of beauty.

I ended up buying a Seat Toledo today. Immaculate condition, and only 13k miles on the clock, and only £20 a year to tax. Ticked all boxes for what I was looking for. Pretty much looks like the below:

Cheers for the advise all.

What cars have we always hankered after but never owned - I'm not talking about a Bugatti or a exotic Lamborghini but cars that we thought we would own one day (and still might) but have yet to get around to it due to other factors (kids, space, money)

For me there is a few.

1. BMW E36 M3 (Evo model) in Estoril Blue - I still look at these on autotrader. Getting harder to find a decent un-abused model

2. BMW 8 series - a beast but still reasonably priced at the moment

3. Porsche 911 (specifically the 964 or 993 version)

I'd like to think I would purchase one of the above one day... but my sensible head at the minute stops me!

Mine was an Audi A5, which I got my hands on last year.

That was my tier 1 dream car, if you like. The one I wanted and was remotely achievable.

I’d say the next level up would be an aston Martin. Db9 probably.

Still in the realms of the possible. But will be a while yet.

DB9 - good choice

The DB7 is a reasonable price but just doesn't have the wow factor of the later day Astons
