The treatment of the migrant workers by Qatar (1|2|3) and FIFA's refusal to acknowledge it until it was undeniable, added to the corrupt manner in which they won the bid, added to the retrospective bending over backwards and 'moving of goalposts' to accommodate their idiotic schedule, means that in my mind everyone involved can shove the whole thing firmly up their corrupt inhuman festering arseholes or die trying. Quote Dozens of Nepalese migrant labourers have died in Qatar in recent weeks and thousands more are enduring appalling labour abuses, a Guardian investigation has found, raising serious questions about Qatar's preparations to host the 2022 World Cup. Quote This corrupt system starts with recruitment under false pretences in their home countries and entraps them once they set foot in Qatar. Talking to workers in the squalid labour camps has brought home to me how these proud young men, who have left home to build a future, are deprived of dignity and treated in the most inhumane way. Worse, in the years that I’ve been visiting the camps, nothing has changed. Quote There are an estimated 1.8 million migrant workers already in Qatar, with 600,000 Indians and 500,000 Nepalese making up the largest number, followed by those from other south Asian countries. The gas-rich nation is spending about £400m a week on infrastructure projects, directly or indirectly related to football’s most prestigious tournament, and the demand for labour is expected to increase over the coming year as work intensifies. It all represents rich pickings for the likes of Thapar, whose business forms part of a flourishing, pernicious chain that begins in remote villages in India and other south Asian countries and ends on the bustling hi-tech construction sites of Qatar. Human rights activists describe it as a form of “modern-day slavery”.
Dr_Pangloss
The fact that England will go to this tournament is a disgrace, if the FA had any sense of morality they'd boycott it. Edited May 18, 2017 by Dr_Pangloss

No nation will boycott. This is supposed to be in the winter as well right? Stupid tournament. It won't feel like a world cup.

AJ
I am stuck. I actually cant think of a more ridiculous decision made by a sporting organisation in the history of sports, and this is taken without the filter of suspected dodgy deals. Even by FIFA's own criteria, that they must have a number of suitable stadiums, they shouldn't have been contenders. Throw in the mix that their team wouldn't even put up a fight, that they are killing their slaves to get their stadiums up and running, and that their climate is so inhospitable it interferes with every nation's domestic competition, and they should never have been in the running. Japan or Korea, we know they can put on a show, and although they have hosted before, either would have been an assuredly safe and comfortable host nation. The USA has also hosted before, but still, would have put on a great World Cup. Australia, honestly, I had reservations. I am sure we would have put on a great show, but I would have been concerned of the economical impact of hosting the World Cup. Compared to the above contenders, Qatar was the " joke nominee". In other news, a 3 legged sheep was elected mayor of a small town in America. His name was Kevin.

sne
So is it a coincidence that this comes but days after Mr Trump visits the Saudis?
TrentVilla Posted June 6, 2017 Moderator Share Posted June 6, 2017 They probably feel emboldened by Trump's visit by this is far more about domestic Middle Eastern politics and little to do with the US in reality.

ender4
If the Qatar embargo by their neighbours carries on for a couple more years, surely they'll have to move the World Cup?

Highly doubtful. Look at what's gone on in Russia since they were (ahem) 'awarded' the 2018 WC and they're still hosting it. we've just got to face facts and accept it's happening and will balls up our league fixtures for several seasons....
