  1. Can't find one doing a search which considering all the whimsical musings over the years is probably operator error so mods, feel free to merge it or whatever as usual, but in answering a question on another thread "Is this the longest run in the clubs history without winning a League, FA Cup or League Cup?" it caused me, as this site can from time to time, to delve into the recesses of the interweb to find some answers. I thought instead of filing my findings away in my never to be seen again file on my desktop I may as well chuck it here as surely someone else might find it interesting over a cup of tea. That or I've wasted a couple of hours!! But there are many times over the last few years where posters have said "I just spent an hour working that out" and maybe somewhere to chuck all this stuff as a resourse tool might stop all that time and effort disappearing into the ether. Proper history buffs please feel free to correct anything you see wrong. Mathematicians feel free to check I've carried the one It is now, in 2017, 21 seasons ago that we lifted the League Cup back in 1996. There are bound to be posters on this site that weren't even born then. That puts it into context somewhat! And counting all divisional titles it is indeed the longest run without one. There's a 37 year period between the 1920 FA Cup win and the 1957 FA Cup win where we didn't win either a Division 1 title or either of the 2 cups (although there was still only the one back then) but there's a division 2 title in there and also 7 years lost to WW II. Anyway here's what I found amongst that long list of numbers we've all looked at. The honours. But with the angle being how long we've had to wait between trophies. It took us 13 years to win an FA Cup from our formation although granted some of that time we were still playing Rugby one half and Association Rules the other! And League Football just wasn't around yet. 1874/75 - 1886/87 (FA CUP) 13 YEARS One more year to go until McGregor does his thing and league football is born......and then it takes us 6 years to win it. 1887/88 - 1893/94 (DIV 1 ) 7 YEARS (1888/89 Football League formed) Own the 1890's.....including the second ever double (after Preston do it in the inaugural 1888/89 Football League season). 1894 - 1895 (FA CUP) 1 YEAR 1895 - 1896 (DIV 1 ) 1 YEAR 1896 - 1897 (D1 + FA CUP) 1 YEAR 1897/98 - 1898/99 (DIV 1 ) 2 YEARS 1899 - 1900 (DIV 1 ) 1 YEAR 3 more trophies before the war...... 1900/01 - 1904/05 (FA CUP) 5 YEARS 1905/06 - 1909/10 (DIV 1 ) 5 YEARS 1910/11 - 1912/13 (FA CUP) 3 YEARS 2 more trophy-less seasons after the 1913 FA Cup win WW I breaks out and we lose seasons 1915/16, 16/17, 17/18, 18/19, but win the FA Cup the year it starts up again. 1913/14 - 1914/15 WW I 1919 - 1920 (FA CUP) 3 YEARS Then it is barren. 37 years until our next First Division or FA Cup win. Our first relegation in 1936 but then also our first Second Division title in 1938. Either way our longest time without a trophy at that point and our longest wait since the formation of the league since which the fans had only ever gone 6 seasons without one of the major trophies. 1920/21 - 1937/38 (Div 2 ) 18 YEARS However 1 year after promotion WW II breaks out and we lose another 7 seasons - namely 1939/40, 40/41, 41/42, 42/43, 43/44, 44/45, 45/46. It takes 11 years after it gets going again before we beat the Busby Babes and all that..... 1938 - 1939 WW II 1946/47 - 1956/57 (FA CUP) 12 YEARS Then 60 years ago we decided the FA Cup wasn't really for us before obviously getting relegated again in 1959 just to get another Second Division title under our belts before the inaugural League Cup... 1957/58 - 1959/60 (Div 2 ) 3 YEARS 1960 - 1961 ( L CUP) 1 YEAR It would be 14 years, some relegations and a promotion until we saw a major trophy like that again (well exactly that trophy), although the Third Division title would set the record for 4th longest wait for any trophy at the time at 11 years. Relegated for a 3rd time in '67 and again to the third tier in 1970. 1961/62 - 1971/72 (Div 3 ) 11 YEARS One more League cup before I'm born 1972/73 - 1974/75 ( L CUP) 3 YEARS And then people stopped counting and lived the dream I guess ending the 71 year wait (60 seasons) for the 7th title along the way. 1975/76 - 1976/77 ( L CUP) 2 YEARS 1977/78 - 1980/81 ( DIV 1 ) 4 YEARS 1981 - 1982 (EUROPEAN CUP + Charity Shield) 1 YEAR 1982 - 1983 (EUROPEAN SUPER CUP) 1 YEAR (As a side note people often say to me "I wish I was born when we won it all". Do you? Do you really? Because I was, but I don't really remember it, so I always wish I was a bit older and could have been around to actually appreciate it. I feel more mocked by the Gods than you basically!! anyway on with the boring.....) 11 years and joint 4th longest wait for a trophy (at that time) with another relegation and resurgence thrown in along the way of course Turner, McNeill, Taylor, Venglos and then League Cup wins for Big Ron and Brian Little, it's all becoming a bit clearer..... 1983/84 - 1993/94 ( L CUP) 11 YEARS 1994/95 - 1995/96 ( L CUP) 2 YEARS And then, just nothing. 1996/97 - ???? 21 years without a trophy. 36 years without a league title. 60 years without an FA Cup win. Longest runs without any trophy: 1996/97 - Present - 21 years 1920/21 - 1937/38 - 18 years 1874/75 - 1886/87 - 13 years 1938/39 - 1956/57 - 12 years (7 lost to WWII) 1983/84 - 1993/94 - 11 years 1961/62 - 1971/72 - 11 years N.B. This does not include the Intertoto Cup. See below.
  2. As part of our work for AVPG we have been researching old Villa pics, from all eras. Here are a few of my favourite Villa moments/eras/players captured on camera I only started following the club in 1992 by the way, so they are all Premier League I'm afraid!
  3. Saw a thread on Twitter of another club’s long range goals. A bit of a dying art these days with Guardiola ruining football. What are the best you’ve seen from Villa players over the years? Share YouTube clips if you can find them
  4. A thread to discuss any unusual merchandise you have. Here's mine: Bought it from Kays Catalogue in the inception year of The Premier League. I've worn it at probably 95% of every game I've attended since then. I wear it under my Villa top so I only don't wear it on really hot days where you really can't be wearing 2 tops. It's been washed so many times it's wearing extremely thin, the neckline is very frayed and it's got holes all over, but I can't stop wearing it now with all it's been through with me. It's obviously an item from it's time
  5. It doesn't have to be about statistics, or trophies or awards or length of service or degree of talent (but it all helps). It can also be intangible things that you think are important to a player's legacy at Aston Villa Football Club. My list in no particular order: Paul McGrath Gareth Barry Ian Taylor Jack Grealish Dean Saunders Gabriel Agbonlahor Emi Martinez Dwight Yorke Mark Bosnich Olaf Mellberg A lot of others right on the bubble, but I had to make some hard choices. I have 10 more who could be on the second team..
  6. I was enjoying this video some of you may have seen and then found this fascinating if heartwrenching website, and I was curious to see what became of some of these young Villans on the edge of the first world war. I count six Villans or former Villans who actually died in the Great War, and at least a couple dozen current or formers who went to war. Who is "Barker" the bulldog on the opening credits? I began to wonder about other Villa players who also served in any military, not only the first world war. Not sure if this can be folded into another topic. It's bit specific, but I find this stuff interesting. Side note: I marvel at the aerial quality of the old game and how much this looks like what you can see today in Afcon. It's amazing, the similarities. The ball is always up!
  7. Yes, that is really what they have come up with.
  8. I’ve had a quick look through the threads and I can’t find anything similar… Tonight wasn’t vintage and you could clearly see it was our fourth game in 10 days, but that City performance and then following it up with that? Wow. For me, City was the best performance I’ve seen from a Villa team since my first game at VP in 2001/02 (Villa 2 - 0 Blackburn). I’d be interested to hear from our older fans - where do our current performances rank amongst the greatest you’ve seen?
  9. Last night I was in a restaurant down here in Bournemouth chatting to a Gent (surname Price) who’s knocking on a bit, who I’ve known for over 20 years. I remembered he had vaguely told me previously that his great grandad was something to do with the Villa but didn’t get chance to ask him for detail. So, last night I asked in what way he connected and he said “my father told me he was on the original committee, one of the founders, name was Walter”. Walter H Price was one of the Villa’s ‘four founding fathers’ and our first captain in 1874. Needless to say I was made up! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_H._Price https://historyofsoccer.info/when_was_aston_villa_founded
  10. You know.... this guy: What do people think of him? With all the talk of new badge and branding can we make use of this guy? Not on the badge obviously, but as an image. I could see him running across the screens or on the website. Dunno really, just think he's an interesting character not really used by the club. Or maybe best just consigned to history.
  11. Reading through a few of the threads tonight, does anybody remember the old Villa Times paper? The character, Godzvilla a mummy type creature who wanted all of the cups? Can you recite the steps of the Holte End in full and remember all of the words to Holte Enders in the sky? do you remember AVFC Aston Villa are magic ringing round the Holte End do you remember the bells are ringing for the Claret and Blue? Clarety blue clarety blue? Do you remember the Villa chant with the wooden seats in the Trinity and the rest of the ground reverberating with Villa Villa? Do you remember knees up mother Brown? do you remember the Doc saying if you hang the 11 Villa shirts to dry on the line, 30,000 people would turn out to watch them dry Do you remember we won the league we won the we won the cup now Ronnie Bendallls f ***ked it up? do you remember Ron Saunders signing a contract as Birmingham City manager on the pitch at St Andrew’s and five minutes later, the C Crew running amok in the Kop Do you remember the Greek, Coke and their merry bunch of men do you remember being locked out of Villa Park at 2 pm against Sunderland, because your uncle would not leave earlier, even though they advised you to do so. do you remember beating the champions of Europe 5-1 at Villa Park and scoring five in the first half? Do you remember Pelé against Santos? do you remember being two nil down to Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona with five minutes to go and drawing 2-2 Do you remember the old AV flood lights visible from miles as you approached Mecca? do you remember Andy Grays hat-trick in the 1977 season in the last game of the season against the Albion to equal the golden boot with Malcolm, Macdonald. Do you remember “are you going to bet against us? do you remember the Rastafarians in the left-hand bottom corner of the Holte and the unique smell that radiated from the area? Do you remember walking from the Windsor 2000 strong to the Sty ? do you remember at night game at Coventry when we had 3/4 of the ground? Do you remember taking 20,000 to Sheffield on a Wednesday night for a league game? do you remember the left side right side and the middle? do you remember the beauty of the old Trinity Road stand? Do you remember the chip shop just up on the left-hand side from the Holte Do you remember the West Indian gentleman’s club next door to it? do you believe in the Villa ?

    Peak Villa?

I'm 38 and so didn't get to enjoy 1982, the Coca Cola Cup was the first trophy I saw us lift. I always have a soft spot for the MON European days and then we hit the skids. I wonder, especially for some of the older lads. Does this feel like peak Aston Villa (to date)? I simply cannot recall a time with such a level of optimism, it almost feels as if the likes of Doug Ellis and Alex McLeish never existed. On top of this our squad is really strong, we have one of the great managers of our time, owners that really seem clued in and ffs, Monchi is Sporting Director! Monchi! Haha, it's comical how far we've come in 18 months let alone 18 years. I loved those Bluenose bashing 00s with Gabby, Ashley Young, Stan and John Carew but this feels like it's on another level. I cannot wait for the next optimism thread! What a glorious time to be a Villa fan.
  13. So, there's a kit thread each year, but I thought a thread for Villa merchandise, both past and present, official and unofficial, would make for a good read. I'll start with this deliciously shit homage to our GK kit that I've just picked up...
  14. Which Villa players should have had much better careers than they did?
  15. Who are some former Villa players or managers who, in "20/20 hindsight," seem to have been treated a bit badly by supporters or the media or VT in the past but now don't seem so unlikable or poor? Player or managers who are perhaps due a reputational rehabilitation?
  16. As a Villa fan who lives in Toronto I am re-doing my office and need an Aston Villa picture put on the wall. I am looking for something great. What do you recommend, what are your favourite Villa related photographs of the stadium, players, moments etc? Thanks in advance.
  17. Who do you consider the most interestingly difficult, useless, villainous, overly selfish, reckless, ungrateful, dishonest, or otherwise problematic player in Villa history? This is absolutely not meant to denigrate or attack any individual, living or dead, but really merely to look at Villa's various amazing casts of player-characters over the years, perhaps even with a begrudging sense of affection for these difficult ones. Indeed, this person might simply be a lot more interesting and a lot more fun than the average virtuous player--and a better player, too. It could be someone who was "a problem" during their time playing for Villa, or someone who, post-Villa, went on to bring infamy and ignominy to themselves or the badge. Who's your greatest Villa Villain?* * Inspired by a recent Claret & Blue podcast
  18. The news that Stilyan Petrov is to be added to our Hall of Fame is to be applauded and it is both well merited and timely. But I am shocked given our proud history and that this hall of fame was created in 2006 that it comprises of just 12 names. Whilst I fully appreciate that a hall of fame needs to be an exclusive list that reflects only those that have given above and beyond the norm to our football club I think that more than 12 names must already be deserving of this accolade. Gordon Cowans, Eric Houghton, Brian Little, Dennis Mortimer, Ron Saunders, Peter Withe, Paul McGrath, Peter McParland, Charlie Aitken, William McGregor, George Ramsay, Billy Walker are shortly to be joined by Stan when the club website's history section is redeveloped at the start of the 2013-14 campaign. Surely there are others that also merit a place on that roll of honour? I would suggest Archie Hunter, Fred Rinder, James Cowan, Charlie Athersmith, John Devey, Joe Bache, Billy George, Howard Spencer, Tommy Smart, Dicky York, Harry Hampton, Pongo Waring, Harry Parkes, Johnny Dixon, Andy Gray, Tony Barton, Graham Taylor, John Gidman, Jimmy Rimmer, Allan Evans, Nigel Spink, Gary Shaw and Tony Morley to start with. There will be others such as the rest of the 1980 – 82 players for example that merit consideration. But who would you add to that list that have hung up their boots or are no longer managing or working in another capacity at our football club?
  19. Not sure if this is real - but theres to be a movie about 1980/81 League Championship Season* https://just14themovie.com/ *We beat Liverpool 2-0 in this season
  20. After an epic loan spell from Bednarek and some chat in his thread so thought maybe best to bring it here. Top 3 and Worst 3 1. Mings 2. Tammy 3. Robbie Keane Worst 1. Drinkwater 2. Michael Bradley {watched him for USA a few times and he looked perfect for Premier League} 3. Coutinho because well we got stuck with his awful contract long term after an underwhelming loam spell Honourable mentions: Pro: El Ghazi, Snodgrass, Walker, Axel, Hause, Cleverley Worst: Holt, Wasteman, Moreira, Ilori, Sinclair
  21. Was discussing this last night, Didier Six comes to mind, was incredible against Manchester United Another that springs to mind was Simon Stainrods 4 goals at St James Park And who can forget Nil Lamptey's (the new Pele as he was billed) stunning hat trick against Wigan All of which went on to achieve diddly squat in the future
  22. Doesn’t have to be balanced. Can be 5 defenders, 5 strikers if you want. Following Villa since 92/93 so I’ll start from then. For me : McGrath Barry Yorke Mellberg Angel
  23. This just turned up over on the facebook Irish Supporters Club page. An elderly man owned it and it was then given to his carer, who gave it to her own grandson. Very cool piece I think you'll agree I've done some digging and come up with the players who played that season and I can spot most of them on there. Joe Rutherford (GK), Harry Parkes, Con Martin, Danny Blanchflower, Frank Junior Moss, Dicky 'Ironman' Dorsett, Herbert 'Little Sport' Smith, Johnny Dixon, Dave Walsh, Tommy 'Toucher' Thompson, Les 'Schmidtz' Smith, Peter Basil Aldis, Derek 'Doc' Pace, Billy 'Cowboy' Goffin, Amos Moss, Larry Canning, Graham Cordell (GK), Colin Hayward Gibson, Stan 'The Wham' Lynn, Keith Jones (GK), Ken 'Shunter' Roberts. Albert Vinall (didn't play)
  24. Just a place for your favourite Villa goals. We should be able to create quite the catalogue & make this a place to come back to and relive special moments. Please refrain to just one video per reply. Put a new video in a seperate post each time. ill start with this banger James Milner vs. Sunderland (2009)
