  1. Possibly too early but the only target now is promotion. Everything that happens from here on in will influence where we finish next season. There is change afoot at every level of the club and while we do not yet know what chance we have because we don't know who will own us, who will manage us or who will play for us, in the absence of that complete picture, for those of us who want to look forward positively and wipe what has just happened these last 10 months from our minds, and focus on promotion, this thread is for you. Cue instant lock and deletion!

I'm not condoning them, but they were made years ago, like he says wen he was a completely different person who was involved with gangs. It feels unfair that they have been dragged up now.

  12. I would like to start a topic that I don't think has been discussed in much depth, however one that needs serious attention when considering how successful this transfer window was. I am over the moon with our summer activity and the people we have brought in, however I have one 'devil's advocate' question which has been bugging me for the last few days: IF we get promoted this season, are we going to sell players like Chester, Jedinak, Kodjia because they will not be able to compete at the top 10 PL level? Or are they just going to be in reserves and eating up our wage budget for the next 3/4 years? Xia showed some serious intention with these transfers, however I don't think any of the players that have been brought in can individually take us where the good Doctor wants to be. Unless of course, we create a real team and do a Leicester, but don't you think this is highly unlikely?
  13. Firstly, apologies that it's taken me so long to get this to you - life is complicated! On 16th August, VillaTalk were invited to the Fans Consultation Group meeting with the club prior to the Huddersfield game. We're a difficult bunch to represent at these things, because unlike a lot of sites, there isn't a VillaTalk "way" - and although Limpid does all of the work, no one really owns the site in terms of its opinions, beliefs, thoughts and ideas - we're an anarcho-socialitst collective brothers and sisters or at least we're a group of people with a lot of different opinions; but, whilst we can't agree on anything at all, there are a lot of us, so we have a voice and the ear of the club. I think that's a good thing and I'm hopeful we can make something out of it. There were representatives of other supporters groups there, including the Aston Villa Trust, Heroes & Villains, avillafan.com, that bloke from Vital Villa who keeps banging on about his advert, Lions Clubs, My Old Man Said and the independent supporters clubs. As distinguished, handsome and slightly unkempt a bunch as you could hope to meet. I'd like firstly to share the agenda with you - and then my opinions. The group are releasing a set of notes to the club collectively in order to ensure that we’re not going away and putting odd slants on things, and that we all heard the same stuff - so the answers will be with you shortly - but the topics are below. With conflicting reports during the takeover and without in any way expecting to breach any individuals privacy, what sort of funding is there now for Aston Villa? Clarification of the board structure The club own 12 acres of land close by and the new owners have expressed an interest in development of a ‘theme park’ football world. Can you elaborate on this? Can we have a commitment from the club to pioneer safe standing in England and can a transitional section for flags and banners (aka singing section) be accommodated, like those that have been successful at other clubs. Plans to address ticketing portal being a mess and phone lines being constantly engaged? What is the club doing in terms of avoiding the negative publicity of the previous ownership that resulted from poor communication? Is a re-brand on the agenda and if so, especially badge wise, will those who understand the issues the best – the fans – be consulted? Update on shelved North Stand disable seating plan / new plans Will you be prepared to consider initiating a youth forum to involve younger supporters? Any plans to increase youth support? An SLO or supporter issues Twitter address like a lot of other clubs have? Are the club moving away from player contract release clauses? Is there any progress on the recruitment of a Technical Director? (if not already announced) Are the new board aware of the previous relationship with Acorns and will this continue? Are the board aware of the Villa Midlands Food (VMF) initiative abruptly stopped by Tom Fox, giving under privileged local youngsters training from which many have excelled? Would this be something they might consider re-starting? Living Wage – all contracted staff? Going forward, these agendas are open to all fans groups, including you - and any questions around the club, the way its operated and how we’ll go forward are very welcome - I’d like to use this thread to collect those. For the most part, whoever attends the meeting will take what’s being discussed in the rest of the site as an indicator of what’s important and then add anything in here. The club seems committed to continuing these meetings in the long term and I think they’re a good opportunity to get what are hopefully, straightforward, honest answers wherever that’s possible. In terms of my opinions, well firstly I was delighted that as well as Keith Wyness, we were also blessed with the presence of the good Doctor himself. Dr Xia spent a good half an hour with us prior to a game and seems keen to talk and listed to supporters. The other thing that comes through is that there's a confidence to the new set up - Wyness in particular carries a relaxed confidence that suggests that all is well. When Tom Fox did this, he was professional, confident but guarded - this was much more relaxed, and there's a feeling that they're going about their work very confidently. I won't go too much into what was said until the meeting notes are released, but there were some interesting things on the progress of the club already, the happy surprise of attendances, the importance of a Villa "way" and of character in the dressing room and elsewhere. Dr Xia listened more than he spoke, but when he spoke, he was open, honest and forthright. As the best indicator on mood, the meeting was attended by Tommy Jordan, the chap that looks after all of our press and media - when he spoke, it was like a man released into the light after last season, he was very positive, he spoke about a club that was moving forward in lots of good ways and he seemed so happy to talk about it that he spent a good fifteen minutes outside afterwards talking with a few of us on a lot of good things that were happening. I genuinely got the feeling that right now, everyone involved can't get enough of this - that they want to talk about the club, they want to move everything forward, they want to change and improve things and that they feel they have the backing to do so. I'll try and explain more why I think that's the case when the minutes are released, but I got a very positive feeling out of this one. (Even though Huddersfield did their best to spoil it.) I'll hopefully have the notes with you very soon and will add a bit more to those when they're released - in the meantime, if there's anything you want VillaTalk to raise with the club through these meetings, let us know!
  14. ...as Take That once said. So we have spent a fair ol' whack of money on decent players and therefore many fans are going to inevitably expect instant results, promotion and an entitlement to success. Although I would say that promotion absolutely has to be the target given what we have spent, I am not personally expecting instant results and I don't think other fans should either. We have completely overhauled the team, the management, the backroom and the boardroom and the whole dynamic of the club has changed very suddenly. All of these new players have to get to know each other, get used to each other, get used to RDM's tactics and instructions, get used to the culture of the club, get used to the city of Birmingham, get used to playing at Villa Park, etc. If any of us moved jobs or our work had a total overhaul, we would expect to have a month or so at least in order to settle, get to know the environment, get to know our colleagues and how the ethos of the office works and how to work with different people and I do think people have to realise it is the same for footballers and staff at football clubs. I'm just conscious that if we don't get a result against Nottingham Forrest at the weekend we will immediately get comments like "same old ****", "xyz was a waste of money", "**** team is still a **** team", etc. which I think is very disheartening for everyone. Let's give the New Villa a chance to gel and get behind them? We have a good squad here and a good manager but it isn't going to happen over night. It is going to take months. I honestly believe if we can have a little bit of patience and ride the waves for a bit, we will have a very solid team here that will be difficult to beat and VP can be a fortress again. It will just take time, effort, patience and unyielding support from the fans. No "RDM out" nonsense after quarter of a season or booing players for making mistakes. That'll just take us back to the poisonous atmosphere we had last season and, ultimately, back to square one. I think our attitudes and expectations have to change with the club...
  15. This poll will be open for the first week of the month.
  16. Well, it's certainly not against the realms of possibility is it? We're so bad. So much work is needed. There's a huge mentality issue at this football club, every time we concede a goal we fall apart.

  18. It appears that the influx of new partners of the club will not be stopping anytime soon, first with Mondogoal and now Heineken. We might be emulating Man Utd here! If this keeps on going, we might need to set up a little list for it! So here we go... MondoGoal (Fantasy Football Partner) - From June 7th 2016 Heineken (Beer Partner) - From June 21st 2016 Resort World Birmingham (Leisure Resort Partner) - From June 28th 2016 Under Armour (Kit Manufacturer) - From July 1st 2016 (5-Year Contract)
  19. It would have been fitting to have won a second successive home league game on a night when the sad passing of Dalian Atkinson was impeccably marked on the tenth minute by home and away fans alike but it was in May 2015 that we last managed to win two home league games in a row. Last night’s 1-1 draw mirrored the score when the two clubs last met at Villa Park in 1987. That point eventually played a part in securing automatic promotion for us and let’s hope this point can do the same but we may well need to make up for points dropped at home with away wins as we did that same season at Huddersfield. Huddersfield were a well organised team last night and they remain unbeaten this season following their visit to us. We played football of the like we have not seen at Villa Park for some time in the first half but only had one goal to show for our dominance at half time. Not for the first time of late this was a game of two halves. Our visitors bossed the second half and left us clinging on desperately at times to our single goal lead. The defence did not crumble under pressure as it did so often last season and our new team demonstrated a will to win that was too often absent last season. But again, not for the first time this season or last we conceded a late goal having been unable to see out a game. Huddersfield’s equalizer needed a huge slice of luck because nine times out of ten a ball that strikes an opponent so far outside of the box will not end up in the back of the net as it did last night. However, it cannot really be argued that on the balance of play they deserved a point for their efforts last night and when Wells came on he gave them an edge they had been previously missing. This new Villa team remains a work in progress and will no doubt be strengthened by further signings before the end of the month. Dropping two points last night will have made it clear to RDM and the Doctor that additions to the squad still need to be made if we are to challenge for promotion this season if they were ever in any doubt. The signs are positive and we will look a better team with more games under our belt. Our aim for me should now be to take a minimum of 4 points from our next 2 away games. My player ratings from a game during which fleeting memories of Dalian playing for us alongside Deano came back to me are: Pierluigi Gollini – 6 – Got down well to save from van La Parra on 18 minutes and bravely dived at the feet of Wells to claim the ball on 57 minutes. He then saved well to his left from a Kachunga overhead shot on 63 minutes before diving at the feet of a forward 6 minutes later to prevent a goal scoring opportunity. Given this he was unlucky that this game will be remembered for an attempted clearance which for the second time in three matches led to a goal. Even the best of keepers can concede a goal like this one (I remember seeing an attempted clearance from Gordon Banks going in off the late Jeff Astle’s backside in 1970). Possibly left too much space to his right when Wells hit the bar from a free-kick on 81 minutes? Leandro Bacuna – 5 – Not as effective as he had been on Saturday. Tommy Elphick - 6 – Hit a ball that fell to him from a corner over on the second minute and headed straight at the keeper on 88 minutes. I have to wonder whether he should have taken responsibility for dealing with the ball rather than leaving it to Gollini to clear it under some pressure. James Chester – 6 – Solid enough. Aly Cissokho – 5 – Put under some defensive pressure in the second half but he was not alone in that. Ashley Westwood – 6 – Hit a couple of passes off target and for me would have benefited from having a defensive minded midfielder alongside Aaron and himself when Huddersfield took hold of the game in the second half. Aaron Tshibola – 7 – Looked promising again and can surely only get better with a run of first team games. Jack Grealish – 7 – MOTM - Nice to see him tracking back when they had possession last night as well as looking a significant threat when he had the ball himself. Jordan Ayew – 7 – Looked sharp last night and gave the Huddersfield defence a torrid time without being able to open his goal scoring account. Hit a well struck shot in the first minute that forced a save from Ward before heading a Gestede cross wide of the far post on 29 minutes. Took a second touch on 45 minutes after Jack had unselfishly played the ball to him inside of the box but had his effort cleared off the line near the post by a defender. Ross McCormack – 7 – Headed home his first goal for Villa on the 25th minute. Jack did so well to bring a Bacuna cross under control before playing the ball across goal where Ross headed in from close range. The first of many goals for us I would suggest. Rudy Gestede – 7 – McCormack’s 40th minute cross was inches too high for him to be able to head downwards. Had a 71st minute header stopped by Ward and was unable to be first to the resultant loose ball. Won some balls in the air but faded in the second half. Substitutes: Andre Green – Replaced McCormack on 79 minutes. Andre was not on long enough to gather a rating. Gary Gardner – Came on for Tshibola on 86 minutes so also had insufficient time to earn a rating. Up the Villa! John Lewis
  20. Yesterday’s win was our first since March. We really had to break the losing habit quickly and we did it in our first home game of the season to provide a much needed confidence boost to both players and fans. Alan Stubbs said following this defeat “We won’t be the last team to come here and get beat”. I hope he is proved right and that Villa Park soon becomes a fortress for us. Rotherham gave a workmanlike performance yesterday but they offered little threat and we will face tougher tests this season at home and away. But we have to beat teams like this if we are to challenge for promotion this season and we did this with something to spare yesterday. We now need to claim a second home win on Tuesday night against Huddersfield which was something that proved beyond pre-season promotion favourites Newcastle yesterday. This is a new Villa team and of yesterday’s starters only six of them were with us last season. We have a new owner and a new management team. The fans responded yesterday by creating a positive atmosphere and by turning up in their numbers. The team achieved the result we needed and had been waiting for. This is the first time we have scored 3 goals in the league at Villa Park since May 2015. We faced the same opposition at Villa Park in our first home game after our 1967 relegation and won that one 3-1. Let us hope we get back where we belong at the first attempt this time as we did in 87-88. My player ratings from a first home game and win of the season are: Pierluigi Gollini – 6 – A quiet afternoon but he was reliable when called upon. Gathered a shot from outside the box on the 46th minute at the second attempt, got down at the post 12 minutes later to save comfortably enough and made a couple of punched clearances. Leandro Bacuna – 6 – Leo got something he and I would not have anticipated yesterday some applause and a suggestion of being given another chance from the fans as he awaits his move to a Champions League outfit. He produced a decent enough performance. Tommy Elphick - 7 – He is a real leader on the field and looks a bargain. Organised our defence very well, led by example and was vocal when needed. He and the rest of our defence will face tougher tests than this one but this was a seriously promising home debut. James Chester – 6 – A solid start so soon after joining us. Aly Cissokho – 7 – Forced a one handed save from Camp on 5 minutes which kept out a shot that was otherwise heading for the top corner after Tshibola had found him on the edge of the box and hit the cross that produced our first goal. Ashley Westwood – 6 – Produced a solid performance. Aaron Tshibola – 7 – A very promising home debut. Hit a shot wide of the post on 50 minutes after Grealish had cut into the box and unselfishly fed him rather than tried a shot himself. He hit a shot wide on 66 minutes from outside of the box after Ayew had squared the ball for him following a terrific run. Jack Grealish – 8 – Scored a sublime goal in front of the Holte End on 84 minutes. Cissokho took a throw near the half way line that Gestede nodded nicely into Jack’s path. Jack then ran into the box pushing the ball wide of first a defender and then the keeper before stroking the ball home from a narrow angle to the despair of a defender behind him who had not quite been able to get a challenge in on him. This goal and aspects of his performance cannot help but give Jack the confidence he needed to shine this season. Had earlier been found by a clever touch by McCormack on 62 minutes and ran from just inside their half to the box before producing a weak finish. Jordan Ayew – 6 – Made a great run on 52 minutes before hitting an inviting cross for Gestede which he turned wide of the post. Some very good moments but he needs to produce them a little more frequently. Ross McCormack – 6 – Like Harry Kane did for England during the summer Ross is taking the lion’s share of our free-kicks and corners. As yet the results have not been too dissimilar. But these are very early days and once he has settled into his new surroundings I have no doubt that the goals will flow along with the assists. Ross did claim a big assist for our second goal which gave us the breathing space we needed to see this game out without undue alarm. He also had a 46th minute shot from outside of the box turned around the post by Camp. Nice to see a player who wants the ball! Rudy Gestede – 8 – MOTM – Rudy’s performance yesterday suggested that he has found his level and that we may yet benefit from having him amongst our available striking options this season. Jack found Cissokho nicely inside of the box and his sweet 21st minute cross was headed beyond the reach of Camp and into the corner of the net by Rudy for our opening goal. He added a second in the final minute of first half stoppage time after Ayew had played the ball to McCormack on the edge of the box and played a clever first time ball past the Rotherham defenders for Rudy to run onto and to chip over the advancing Camp. Headed a Bacuna cross wide of the post on 29 minutes and failed to get a touch to a nice ball played across the face of the goal 4 minutes later. Substitutes: Adama Traoré – Replaced Ayew on 74 minutes. His pace could prove too much for defenders at this level to cope with. He did not see quite enough of the ball to lead to his getting a rating yesterday. Gary Gardner – Came on for McCormack on 85 minutes so had insufficient time to earn a rating. Andre Green – Replaced Jack on 92 minutes so also did not have the time on the field to gather a rating. Up the Villa! John Lewis
  21. http://www.avfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10265~5513104,00.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter A small reduction but seeing we are in the Championship I expected sub £500
  22. I predict the same kind of results & performances like last season. Unsure at the back - mistakes leading to goals No protection from the midfield No dominance from our midfield no creativity from our midfield apart from a few glimpses of hope from Ayew & Grealish. I think RDM will use a few Cancers in the opening games, a few subs too, more in the away games. The results and performances will see the fans turn quicker than ever before. The burden of the home record will finally be too much for the fans and RDM AVFC will be stting somewhere below midtable by The beginning of Nov. The Shiesters will still all be here, the returnees, newbees & Youthers will all be dragged down by the Losers who F***ed us last season. Heads will drop RDM blowing the only real chance of succeeding by 2nd chancing, re-intigrating and/or tollerating the shiesters because he wouldnt/couldnt just sell them/give em away/banish them from the squad/Just tell them to stay at home till their contracts run out or their agents get their fingers out. Grasshopper ps It all starts to unfold live on TV this sunday My F*** its gonna hurt so much just knowing whats going to happen unravel itself right before my own eyes. Knowing full well that our problems are there right in front of us, not even hidden, even dumbf***s like me can see it. The thread will lock before the season starts to preserve the results. Limpid
  23. This was admittedly only a friendly but this game gave little cause for optimism for the season that is ahead of us. This performance was uncomfortably similar to many of the displays that we gave last season and those around me were openly questioning what differences there actually has been on the pitch itself rather than off it. We had the best of the game until they hit their equalizer on the hour mark. But our defence suddenly looked shaky as it had done more often than not last season. The visitors hit a second on 74 minutes and added another two minutes later to run out comfortable winners. We looked weak at the back, lacked creativity in the middle and lacked a cutting edge up front. It only took a goal to see the frailties and insecurities of last season re-emerge. These are not new problems and there is a lot of work to be done to turn things around. Players need to be signed and we need to start those signings with a striker to play alongside Ayew. Can we progress with much the same squad that got us relegated last season? I doubt it very much. We need a team that will not think the worst when we go behind and will not have the memory of last season hanging over most of their heads when they start each match. The league we face will not have teams of the standard that we faced last season but it will have teams that will relish the prospect of beating us by giving it everything. This new season has to be better than last and we cannot linger in this division. We need to start well and to expect to win games rather than to lose them. We also need to do what is needed both off and on the pitch to make that happen. This game demonstrated that we may still be at best a work in progress. My player ratings from a game that did little to lift our pre-season hopes are: Pierluigi Gollini – 6 – MOTM – Looked confident, commanded his area well and distributed the ball effectively. Parried a shot from Fischer on 60 minutes but Negredo was left in space to hit home the rebound for their equalizer. Left exposed for the other two he conceded. Alan Hutton – 5 – Worked hard and put a foot in as he can be relied upon to do. Made his usual forward runs but they continue to lack an end product. Tommy Elphick - 5 – Will now be aware of the job he faces in trying to steady the troubled and anxious defence he finds himself now in. Nathan Baker – 6 – Looked commanding in the first half but somewhat less so in the second. Climbed highest at the far post to head home a 15th minute cross from Bacuna. Aly Cissokho – 5 – Hit some decent crosses but lost possession in the build up to their first. Leandro Bacuna – 4 – Maintaining his fitness pending his impending move to a Champions League outfit. I have to question what he has shown to be still starting games for us. Gary Gardner – 5 – A steady first half performance. Ashley Westwood – 5 – Needs to stand out more in this sort of midfield line-up than he did yesterday. Jack Grealish – 6 – Looked more confident and committed than he did last season but he needs to try to take games like this by the scruff of the neck and make things happen. Jordan Ayew – 5 – Jordan started well enough but he failed to sustain that level of performance as the game wore on and looked to be lacking in motivation at times which is a concern. Forced a save from Valdes on 14 minutes and touched the ball inches wide of the post from close range on 38 minutes. Rudy Gestede – 4 – Lacked pace as well as movement and I did not see anything yesterday that suggested he will terrorise defences this season or provide us with the goals that we need to mount a promotion challenge. Substitutes: Aaron Tshibola – 6 - Replaced Gardner at half time and looked solid enough. Andre Green – 6 – Replaced Bacuna on 75 minutes and showed some nice touches. For me he should be starting games in front of the player that he replaced yesterday. Ciaran Clark – Replaced Baker on 89 minutes so did not have enough time to earn any rating. Jordan Amavi - Made a welcome if brief return from his long-term injury when replacing Cissokho on 89 minutes. He also had insufficient time to get a rating. Up the Villa! John Lewis
  24. This poll will be open for the first week of the month.
  25. i was hoping to post this in a similar manner on an already existing thread seeing as you guys usually get all topics of conversation covered, but i couldn't see one to suit, so here goes... taking many factors into consideration, like this season is already over as villa are just the whipping boys for the other league teams training sessions, many of the over paid pre-madonnas are clearly going to jump ship, and for some, if they don't jump they will have to be pushed as the club wont be able to pay the sort of wages that these 'footballers' 'earn'. so who can we hope to see the back of? what youth can we hope to see get promoted to the first team? should we even expect any purchases? hopefully we will see the back of nzogbia, lescott, richardson and richards, unfortunately we might see okore, crespo, gil, traore and sinclair leave, and i reckon ayew might want out as well. players like clark, baker, westwood, bennett, gardner, veretout and gestede may play better. id like to see donacien, kinsella, mason, lyden, robinson and sellers make the first team on a regular basis.
